PDF in Quality Protein Maize Improvement
The International Maize and
Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking applications
from innovative, self-motivated, scientifically outstanding
plant breeders to support the development of high-yield,
stress-tolerant Quality Protein Maize (QPM) varieties for
tropical environments, primarily in Latin America.
The position will be based
at CIMMYT’s Main Campus located 45 km northeast of Mexico City,
Mexico, but will involve travel to other CIMMYT field sites
within Mexico on a regular basis. The position is initially
available for two years and may lead to a career path position
in maize breeding.
This
is a re-advertisement for a position originally announced in
2007.

The primary responsibilities will include
- QPM inbred line
development and hybrid evaluation
- Genetic analysis of at
least one abiotic or biotic stress tolerance trait (e.g.
drought, low-N, waterlogging, or ear rot tolerance), to
develop a marker-assisted selection protocol for application
in CIMMYT maize breeding activities
- Participation in
developing and maintaining a pedigree information database
We are seeking candidates
with the following qualifications
- Recent Ph.D. degree in
plant breeding or closely related field, preferably with
emphasis on maize.
- Understanding of
experimental design, management of field trials, and field
breeding operations
- Understanding of field-
and lab-based (NIR, molecular marker) techniques relevant to
maize and their application to germplasm characterization
and development as they relate to quality and industrial
traits
- Strong experience in a
field or horticultural crop research program
- Excellent computer skills,
and experience with SAS, GENSTAT, or other statistical
software
- Demonstrated ability to
publish in refereed science journals
- Proficiency in spoken and
written English; ability to speak Spanish or willingness to
learn
- Interest in international
research and development
- Demonstrated ability to
work collegially and collaboratively in diverse,
multicultural partnerships.
