POSITION:  Global Product Manager Root and Bulb

Seminis Vegetable Seeds, a division of Monsanto, is the world's largest developer, grower and marketer of fruit and vegetable seeds.

KEY BUSINESS ACCOUNTABLES

  1. Manage Seminis Global root and bulb seed business (onion, carrot, and leek). Key accountabilities include management of product portfolio and maximizing the overall profitability of the root and bulb business. 

  2. Develop and implement a rolling five year comprehensive global root and bulb business strategy designed to increase market share and value return. Create and implement action plan to achieve objectives and drive completion through the root and bulb crop teams. Key elements include portfolio strategy, pricing, global branding, IP, value creature and capture. 

  3. Lead the Global Crop team for root and bulb. Working with functional representatives on the team (Regional Product managers, Breeding, Tech Dev, Manufacturing, and Finance) establish key deliverables and measure results against the goals. Identify actions and resources to achieve growth plans at a regional level and in line with corporate/global objectives.

  4. Lead the annual long range planning (LRP) process, enabled via the regional crop teams, across regional business units, culminating in global consolidation. Comprehensive overview includes key market segmentation, growth objectives and strategies, regional business and product focus, competitor analysis, key functional linkages (ex. breeding /technical development), and value capture. 

  5. Track key financial crop metrics on a monthly basis with responsibility in representing business results to Seminis leadership. 

  6. Lead global coordination of the annual business planning for root and bulb across regional business units including annual budget development and pricing.

  7. Provide strategic and tactical support to regional product managers (RPM’s) and crop teams in the Americas, EMEA and Asia. Significant interaction with the RPM’s with whom position has a dotted line supervision capacity (direct with the regional market leads). Many of the key deliverables and accountabilities are driven through at the regional level. Provide regional crop teams with strategic and tactical support necessary to ensure their success. 

  8. Provide global product planning coordination (Life Cycle Management) for assigned crop(s) across brands and regions, including important linkages with research and technical development regarding product advancement, field sales regarding demand forecasting, supply management regarding production planning, customer service regarding product availability and finance regarding P&L coordination.

  9. Champion product life cycle management with regional product management leads, regional marketing and sales managers to facilitate better decision-making regarding product advancement, IP protection, production planning, foundation seed planning, trait development, licensing opportunities, pricing strategies and promotion tactics.

  10. Serve as the primary contact with supply management to coordinate development of annual crop plans, production priorities, cost of goods management, seed quality direction and obsolescence control. 

  11. Supervise crop product planning process in:

    • Monthly demand forecasting process with field sales, determining appropriate timing, information needs, analysis, reporting and tracking, with accountability to regional and senior management.

    • Coordination of product availability with customer service and supply management, including product allocations.

    • Development/maintenance of a master utilization and obsolescence spreadsheet by crop by hybrid/variety that assists the RPM and regional marketing managers to analyze various product pricing scenarios and enables the financial support staff to update P&Ls for quarterly/monthly forecasts, as required

    • Joint accountability with RPM’s in collecting market information and placing into the ZMIT database.
      Includes surface area, Seminis market share, prices, and competitive information. 

SCOPE OF THE JOB

  • Facilitate Cross Functional Crop Business teams to develop key objectives, strategies and tactics to insure positive results.

  • High level of interaction with senior management within all functions – breeding, technical development, manufacturing, legal, finance, sales and marketing. 

  • Key linkage with research/technical services and supply management regarding product advancement and production planning. 

  • Responsible for global management of the product life cycle process and portfolios.

  • Supervise demand forecasting process, as well as master utilization spreadsheet for pricing and P&L development/management.

  • Close collaboration with regional marketing and sales managers, seed marketing support, including consumer trait platform team.

  • Key business metrics (by crop): regional and global unit volume, gross revenue, cost of goods, obsolescence and net income.

CORE BUSINESS/FUNCTIONAL SKILLS AND EDUCATION

  • Minimum B.S. in agriculture, agronomy, business or marketing.

  • 7-10 years agriculture experience in sales/marketing/agronomic/product management; seed experience preferred.

  • Solid commercial product knowledge.

  • Working understanding of product development and supply management processes.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and achieve business results across multi-disciplinary teams and matrix organization.

  • Capacity to communicate and work effectively with different reporting levels in multi-national and cultural organization.

  • Strong strategic and analytical skills applied to achieving business results.

  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills.

  • Understanding of key P&L components/impact.

  • Domestic and international travel as required.
