Open Position: Assistant breeder for Short-Day Onions,
based near Bakersfield, California
Essential Functions
-
To work
with and learn from our head breeder for short-day onions,
to plan, organize and evaluate trials and to select onion
material for superior performance for targeted markets.

To think
creatively in order to improve breeding processes and in
order to advance our position with market appropriate
varieties.

This
position will focus on the short day group, but will be part
of a team of allium breeders that cover the global onion
markets.
Additional responsibilities
-
Breeding
bulb management selected from various trial locations.
-
To
coordinate cage productions and small crossing cages with
the farm manager, which will include cultural practices,
pollination insects, seed harvest, seed cleaning and
packaging.

To assist
other breeders in the team with other allium projects as
their projects require.
Qualifications
-
Training
and education in plant breeding.
-
Knowledge
in onions and breeding experience in onions a plus.
-
Candidate
should have excellent communication and inter-personal
skills, organizational ability, basic computer skills, and
be an independent and self motivated worker.

Must have
strong English skills,
-
Spanish
language skills are a plus.

Must be
able to travel and to endure long periods outdoors in warm
climates.

Must be
able to work with multi function teams including production,
marketing, and bio technology specialists.
