POSITION: Research Station Manager

Role Purpose

Manage all station activities needed to support effective field, greenhouse and laboratory vegetable breeding, pathology and produce quality research.

Accountabilities

  • Manage all farming operations to insure that crop culture operations are administered in a timely manner to optimize crop growth and development. Coordinate with all scientists to insure that their farming requirements are met to maximize the results of all research projects. 

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of buildings, grounds and support equipment related to the site based breeding projects. Maintain all buildings including, labs and shop, greenhouses, grounds and equipment in a cost-effective manner to meet functional and safety requirements. Troubleshoot equipment related problems, Supervise the maintenance of all buildings including labs, field shop, greenhouses, growth chambers and office facilities in a cost effective manner to meet functional and safety requirements. 

  • Supervise the maintenance of all farm equipment.

  • Maintain a long term plan for crop rotation and stewardship of the land.

  • Maintain detailed records of crop history, crop rotation and pesticide usage.

  • Supervise the accurate and timely posting of all fields and greenhouses with worker notification of safe re-entry times in accordance with new EPA “Worker Protection Standards”.

  • Manage water levels as necessary, especially during periods of heavy rain, to prevent flooding of fields.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safer and more effective pesticides as well as other “best practices” for use on the farm and in the greenhouses. 

  • Act as a full time member of the site HSE committee.

  • Act as deputy incident commander for local emergency management system.

  • Manage farm operations staff and seasonal labor pool to maximize output and efficiency.

  • Prepare and administer station operating budget including allocation plan to various projects.

  • Develop and maintain a strong network of local grower, extension and crop protection contacts for continuing education as well as for support in troubleshooting station problems.

  • Determine capital improvement needs.

  • Perform other duties as needed.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

Critical knowledge

• Bachelors Degree in Plant Science or related field preferred with 3 years plant breeding support experience.

Critical experience

• Knowledge of farm equipment and its maintenance
• Strong knowledge of field drip irrigation operation and maintenance
• Experienced in growing multiple vegetable crops required
• Computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Lotus Notes)
• Strong general management skills
• Fluency in Spanish desirable
• Pesticide applicators license required
• Strong knowledge of sandland vegetable agricultural techniques
• Strong communication skills
• Desire to continue to develop personal skills in all areas related to the position
• CDL desirable.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

• Four (4) to six (6) years in farming and/or farm operations experience required. Direct vegetable farming experience required.
• Four (4) years supervisory experience required.
• Two (2) years site management experience preferred.

Critical leadership capabilities

• Ability to interact with people in a respectful, cooperative but assertive manner resulting in the achievement of program and company goals.
• Maintain safe working conditions. At all times, conduct work personally and for those supervised with the utmost of worker safety in mind
• Set and maintain high work standards for self and those supervised for efficiency and accountability for action as performed.
