POSITION:  Research Scientist, Herbicide Trait Development

Job location: Johnston, Iowa

Pioneer has established a new research management position, Research Scientist Herbicide Trait Development, which will report to the Sr. Research Manager Crop Genetics Research & Development.

This new research leader will coordinate and execute a well-resourced, global research program to evaluate and characterize all herbicide traits and herbicide formulations for weed control and crop safety on new or existing herbicide resistance traits within the Pioneer pipeline or portfolio and will work with product development and registration groups to drive integration of biological performance into commercial opportunity.

The Research Scientist Herbicide Trait Development will:

  • Conduct and/or supervise herbicide field efficacy trials on new transgenic events in corn and soybeans.

  • Supervise a group of scientists and support staff responsible for evaluating new and supporting existing herbicide resistance traits. 

  • Design, execute, and interpret experimental data from field trials to characterize the efficacy of lead transgenic herbicide resistant events against target weed species across multiple crops and environments, early in the trait development process. 

  • Participate on cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams within Pioneer that are charged with the planning, management, and execution of advancement and development plans for pre-commercial transgenic herbicide resistant events in corn and soybean.

For this important role, Pioneer seeks a strong research leader with excellent strategic vision and team-building skills, significant expertise in applied field research, an in-depth working knowledge of field testing herbicides and scientific procedures, and strong background in global herbicide products. Superior performance in this position will lead to further career opportunities within the organization. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D. (preferred) or Master's degree in agronomy, plant physiology, weed science, or a related plant science discipline with 4 to 6 years of product development experience. 

  • In-depth, hands-on working knowledge of corn and/or soybean herbicide resistance trait evaluations and event management. Several years of successful management of both directly reporting and collaborative (or cooperative) researchers.
