Summary:

As an agricultural professional I have over 20 years of experience in field of research working primarily with corn. Primary areas of responsibility have included: (1) corn regional or station management requiring familiarity with all aspects of mainland and winter nursery and testing activities for the development of 70-95 day RM hybrids, (2) technical advisor to several early European corn research programs, and (3) establishment and management of an off-season nursery facility in Chile for use by early North American and European breeders. As a commercial corn breeder, I have been responsible for the development of several commercial hybrids in North America.

Professional experience:

Syngenta Seeds Limited, Bangkok, Thailand
Regional Corn Product Development Manager- Asia Pacific (June 2003 to Dec 2006). Countries include Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Pakistan.

Key achievements in Asia Pacific:

Successfully introduced NK40 in Indian market, first single cross in high price segment market.
Introduced NK6621 in Pakistan autumn market capturing over 30% market share. Introduced two temperate hybrids for spring market. NK8441 is the leader in spring market.
Stressed the importance of plot quality.
Reduced the number of hybrids being tested by increasing the number of locations at each stage in testing.
Stressed the importance of seed parent yield through a vigorous seed production research across all production locations.
Successfully introduced double haploid program to speed up the inbred development program.
Was instrumental in starting Isozyme lab and upgraded to PCR facility in 2006.
Brought down the research expenditures from 22% in 2003 to 12% by 2006 by reducing cost of labor and increasing sales via vigorously promoting hybrids like such as NK40, NK48 and NK6621.
Started a breeding program in Bangalore, India in high price segment market.
Implemented a robust pathology program to screen all breeding material for major pathogens in the northern Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia.
Data collection in the field was all automated via hand held PC's across all APAC countries.
Was aggressive in testing tropical and sub tropical material in SW China.
Successfully introduced tropical and subtropical silage hybrids in Japanese market.
Was able to penetrate into Bangladesh and Sri Lankan markets with products developed in Thailand capturing 25% market share in Bangladesh.
Aggressively introduced temperate material via introgression program to broaden tropical germplasm base and increase yields with dents.
Introduced BT hybrid in Philippine market.
Was successful in testing Round up ready corn in 2006 in Philippines
Successfully introduced 0-3 stage protocol to determine the merit of initial project startups early on the developmental program.
Was instrumental in introducing hybrid promotion meetings involving research, foundation, production, seed production research and sales.
Worked very closely with other tropical and sub tropical programs within and across regions
Encouraged the development of Regional hybrids to reduce the cost of goods and excess inventories
Developed distinct APAC market segments to allow for appropriate germplasm movement between countries in the region

Management responsibility for the off-season nursery location in Chile for 10 years
Technical advisor or liaison (for 6 years) to 3 corn research programs in Ukraine and Russia
Overall coordination of station breeding program for grain and silage including management of 30-acre mainland breeding nursery and material at 4 off-season winter nursery locations and 10 yield trial locations
Represented Corn Research Department on Ruminant Cross Functional Team.
As a regional manager I was responsible for coaching regional breeders, facilitate germplasm movement and information flow, focus on assessment and implementation of breeding enhancements, determine allocation of resources in region, determine product needs and implement project plans, coordinate product advancement within region, implement technology enhancements, brainstorm process improvements, assess breeding material collectively and interact with agronomy services/marketing/sales in the region.

Overall coordination of corn breeding program focusing on the development of 70-95 day RM grain and silage hybrids.
Preparation and accountability of annual budget of approximately $750,000 CDN.

Recommendations to management regarding parental seed stock increase and hybrid pilot needs.
Management of hybrid corn and soybean entries in the Canadian Licensing and Recommendation System in all provinces.
