Agreement Establishes AgrEvo’s Rice Crop Production Platform in South America

Hoechst Schering AgrEvo GmbH (AgrEvo) and Granja 4 Irmaos S.A. (Granja) announced today that they have signed a definitive acquisition agreement. AgrEvo agreed to acquire the Granja rice breeding program and its associated assets.

Granja is the largest producer of rice seeds in Brazil, while its affiliated company Josapar, is the country’s largest rice grain retailer. Josapar’s products include the leading "Tio João" rice brand. Granja began its rice breeding program in 1990 and last year launched its first proprietary variety, Supremo 1. The Granja rice breeding program targets development of high quality rice grain, including specialty varieties such as basmati and jasmine types. Granja has also been developing hybrid rice in collaboration with the French national research institute, CIRAD.

According to Sergio Olivera, Executive Director of Granja S.A., the acquisition agreement is very positive for all parties. "With this agreement we have secured the future of our breeding program and of our employees – it is also advantageous to our shareholders and customers. AgrEvo is
clearly committed to building its rice seed business in Brazil and will introduce state-of-the-art technology which our rice producers require to remain competitive."

Olivera added that the agreement with AgrEvo will help ensure that Brazil is at the forefront of accessing the latest in biotechnology, rice seed technology, and crop protection products. "We are looking forward to working closely with AgrEvo as it builds its rice crop production business
in South America."

Rice is the world’s largest food and feed crops Brazil’s rice production is severely constrained by weedy red rice. AgrEvo’s on-going development of LibertyLinkâ rice aims to provide farmers with an innovative weed control system for red rice. Last year there were in excess of 1.5 million
hectares of rice under cultivation in the main growing areas of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

Dr. Prante added that "Brazil is currently amongst our most important markets and the country is clearly developing as one of the globe’s agricultural powerhouses. We will build our rice crop production business further in Brazil using our LibertyLinkâ and other proprietary biotechnology, as we ll as our new elite rice germplasm. This is another strong move towards implementing our strategy of combining germplasm, biotechnology and innovative crop protection products."

AgrEvo ist a global player in Biotechnology, Seeds, Crop Protection and Environmental Health. The company markets a wide range of products for enhancing crop production, together with applications for urban pest control. AgrEvo operates in more than 70 countries with approx. 9000
employees. Sales for 1997 were DM 4,1 billion.

Granja 4 Irmaos S.A., based in Pelotas, Brazil, cultivates annually a rice area of 7.000 hectares being the main Josapar’s supplier. Josapar, based on the genetic program which will be continued by AgrEvo, will be launching soon the special variety already mentioned before.

AgrEvo Plattform für Reispflanzenproduktion in Südamerika

Hoechst Schering AgrEvo GmbH (AgrEvo) und Granja 4 Irmaos S.A. (Granja) geben heute bekannt, daß die beiden Unternehmen einen verbindlichen Übernahmevertrag unterzeichnet haben. AgrEvo übernimmt das Reiszüchtungsprogramm.

Granja ist der wichtigste Produzent für Reis- Saatgut in Brasilien. Josapar, ein zur Granja Gruppe gehörendes Unternehmen, zählt zu den größten Reis- Händlern in Brasilien und vertreibt die führende Reismarke "Tio Juan". Granja begann ihr Reiszüchtungsprogramm 1990 und brachte letztes Jahr ihre erste eigene Sorte "Supremo 1" auf den Markt. Ziel ihres Reiszüchtungsprogramms ist es, Hochleistungssorten zu entwickeln, darunter Spezialtypen wie Basmati- und Jasminreis. In Zusammenarbeit mit Frankreichs staatlichem Forschungsinstitut CIRAD hat Granja auch Reishybriden entwickelt.

Laut Sergio Olivera, geschäftsführender Direktor bei Granja S.A., wirkt sich die Übernahme für alle Beteiligten sehr positiv aus. "Durch diese Vereinbarung sichern wir sowohl die Zukunft für unser Züchtungsprogramm als auch für unsere Mitarbeiter – Vorteile davon haben aber auch unsere Anteilseigner und Kunden. AgrEvo will sich für den Aufbau ihres Reissaatgeschäfts in Brasilien mit allen Kräften einsetzen und wird uns die fortschrittlichsten Technologien zur Verfügung stellen, damit unsere Reisproduzenten konkurrenzfähig bleiben."

Durch diese Vereinbarung mit AgrEvo bekomme Brasilien einen möglichst frühen Zugang zu den neuesten Entwicklungen in der Biotechnologie und der Reissaatguttechnologie sowie im Pflanzenschutz. "Wir freuen uns auf eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit AgrEvo beim Aufbau ihrer Reisproduktion in Südamerika."

Reis ist die am weitesten verbreitete Kultur für die menschliche und tierische Ernährung. In Brasilien wird die Reisproduktion durch Verunkrautung mit einer roten Wildreisart ernsthaft beeinträchtigt. Hier will AgrEvo im Rahmen der Weiterentwicklung von LibertyLinkâ Reis den
Reisanbauern ein innovatives Unkraut-Kontrollsystem an die Hand geben. In den Hauptanbaugebieten Brasiliens, Uruguays und Argentiniens wurde Reis im vorigen Jahr auf mehr als 1.5 Millionen Hektar angebaut.

Dr. Gerhard Prante weiter: "Brasilien gehört zu unseren bedeutendsten Märkten und entwickelt sich eindeutig zu einer treibenden Kraft der globalen Landwirtschaft. Mit unserem LibertyLinkâ System und anderen patentrechtlich geschützten Biotechnologien sowie mit unserem
