Boise, Idaho
September 30, 1998Now theres a determinate
yellow tomato that offers the potential for high yields despite pressure from graywall.
Five years of university trials have shown that the blotchy, brownish-gray areas
associated with this disease may be minimized for growers of Carolina Gold, a new Rogers® brand variety from
Novartis Seeds, Inc., Vegetables.
Carolina Gold was recently released from the breeding
program of Dr. Randy Gardner, professor of horticultural science at North Carolina State
University. It joins four other North Carolina State releases--Mountain Spring, Mountain
Gold, Mountain Belle, and Sun Leaper-- all produced and marketed exclusively by Novartis.
Like these varieties, Carolina Gold has a small blossom scar and a strong, vigorous vine
adaptable to both bush and stake culture.
Carolina Gold matures mid season on a medium-tall, vigorous
plant. It has shown resistance to Verticillium wilt race 1, and Fusarium wilt races 1 and
2. Strong tolerance to graywall, cracking, and weather check in University trials has
boosted harvests of firm, large to extra-large, deep-oblate yellow fruit in all tomato
growing regions throughout the U.S.
Seed of Carolina Gold is currently available from all
Rogers®
brand dealers.
