April 2, 2003
Significant changes have been
made to the NIAB Recommended
Lists of grass and herbage legumes following recent
consideration of the performance in trials of 39 varieties.
Eight new varieties have been
added to the 2003/2004 lists. Among the other category changes
of particular interest was the movement of the Intermediate
Perennial Ryegrass AberDart, Tetraploid Intermediate
Ryegrass Fornax and the Tetraploid Italian Ryegrass
Fabio from 'Provisionally Recommended' (PG) to 'Fully
Recommended' (G). They all have exceptional yields with
quality, good disease resistance and ground cover for their
respective groups.
NIAB grass specialist Steven
Bentley commented "These additions confirm the value of new
varieties, with plant breeders continuing to offer advances in
yield, quality, disease resistance and persistence to stock
farmers."
"The herbage recommended lists
are funded by merchants in the NIAB Grass Levy Scheme and
farmers should always consult contributing trade members for the
most up to date information," he added.
NIAB will be exhibiting grass
variety plots, including those added here to the Recommended
List, at Seale Hayne, Devon on Friday 9 May and at Headley Hall,
Yorkshire on Thursday 15 May. Both events will start at 11.00am
and provide an excellent opportunity to discuss new developments
within the grass market and consider the potential of the
varieties available for mixtures.
Descriptions of new varieties
AberZest (PS)
Late perennial
ryegrass
Breeder: IGER
UK Agents: British Seed Houses Ltd
Good yields, quality and ground cover compensate for its poor
resistance to Drechslera.
Herbal (PS)
Late tetraploid Perennial ryegrass
Breeder: RAGT
UK Agents: Advanta Seeds UK Ltd
Good yields especially under the simulated grazing management
compensate for its poor resistance to mildew.
Glencar (PS)
Late tetraploid Perennial ryegrass
Breeder: Teagasc
UK Agents: DLF- Perryfields
Excellent conservation yields especially in the third year but
this is a specialist variety due to its poor quality.
Alliance (PS)
Tetraploid Hybrid ryegrass
Breeder: Advanta BV, NL
UK Agents: Advanta Seeds UK Ltd
An Italian type hybrid with excellent early spring yields for
short term leys.
Dolina (PG)
Timothy
Breeder: DLF UK
Agents: DLF- Perryfields
A very high yielding variety which compensates for the poor
quality.
Winnetou (PG)
Timothy
Breeder: DLF
UK Agents: DLF- Perryfields
The average yields are supported by good quality and ground
cover results.
Grasslands Bounty (PG)
White Clover
Breeder:
Ag.Reseach, NZ
UK Agents: Advanta
Good yields with persistency under the hard defoliation
management system.
Makuri (PG)
White Clover
Breeder: Ag.Reseach, NZ
UK Agents: Barenbrug UK
Good yields and autumn ground cover for a large leaf clover
variety.
Four varieties have been moved
from the 'Provisional' to the 'Fully Recommended' category (G)
and three varieties for 'Special Use' (S). Two varieties
currently Fully Recommended as G or S were re-evaluated and
confirmed as still performing well within their categories.
Three were transferred to ‘O’ category and will no longer be
re-sown as the newer varieties have superseded them. Two
varieties were removed from the lists. Twelve varieties were
considered as having insufficient potential to justify inclusion
onto the lists.
One new red clover, one cocksfoot
and four lucerne varieties have been added to the Descriptive
Lists
