Monsanto summer field days highlight 30 new soybean varieties that prove growers can have high yields and in-seed defense packages, too

St. Louis, Missouri
July 31, 2003

Asking for soybean seed that offers both high yield and in-seed protection packages may seem like asking to have one’s cake and eat it, too. But at field days this summer, soybean growers will find the answer to many of their requests is now available in 30 new Asgrow® and DEKALB® varieties.

"Asgrow and DEKALB soybean varieties have always offered soybean growers a high value, thanks to performance and innovative technology. But in the past, some felt that, no matter the brand, they had to choose between a variety with high yield potential or a variety with in-seed protection against pests and disease," said Dion McBay, Asgrow and DEKALB Soybean Marketing Manager for Monsanto.

"When they look at our new varieties in plots this summer, they will see products where that is not the case. The technology and traits in our 30 new varieties mean growers can chose seeds with both high yields and built-in disease and pest resistance."

In 1,457 head-to-head comparisons conducted last year, these new varieties outyielded Pioneer® varieties by 3.5 bushels per acre. Results like these have a lot of people enthusiastic about next season.

"These new varieties offer the combined high yields and resistance that producers need. AG-2107, for example, is especially effective in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota, where there is a large increase in cyst pressure," reports Tim Schlueter, U.S. Soybeans Product Manager for Asgrow and DEKALB. "In our trials, it outyielded competitors’ cyst and non-cyst products. This same variety also has iron chlorosis tolerance, Phytophthora root rot resistance and very good tolerance to white mold disease. Our other varieties offer many benefits as well."

More than 90% of the new soybean varieties available for 2004 are Roundup Ready® varieties. Also available in the new varieties are built-in protection systems against diseases and pests like soybean cyst nematode, sudden death syndrome and brown stem rot.

Field days and plot tours where growers can see the new Asgrow and DEKALB varieties— 16 from Asgrow and 14 from DEKALB — are in locations all over the Midwest.
