Sunseeds launches Target, a new premium onion seed coating
Parma, Idaho
December 11, 2003

Sunseeds has announced the introduction of Target, a new premium onion seed coating designed to improve uniformity and yield for onion growers.

The premium heavy pellet, to be introduced in January 2004, is expected to become the new industry standard. Initially, Target will be available for eight Sunseeds onion varieties: Renegade, Bandolero, Sabroso, Ranchero, Granero, Vaquero, Infinity and Millennium.

According to Rich Rasmussen, Sunseeds regional sales manager, Target is a heavier pellet (10,000 to 11,000 pills per pound) than most other leading pelleted onion seeds. He said Target-coated seed has performed well under trial conditions the past couple of years. He also said one of the biggest advantages of planting the heavier pellets is that there is less “bounce” in the planter row.

In addition to Target’s bright orange color, the pellet allows for more accurate seed placement resulting in better size uniformity at harvest time.

“Target’s uniform round shape and high visibility make this pill the new industry standard,” Rasmussen said. “Target flows smoothly through the planter, so there’s less bridging, grinding and dust.”
