Out of 16 new varieties considered for addition to the
British Beet Research
Organisation (BBRO) funded
NIAB Recommended List of Sugar Beet varieties for 2003, four
new additions were approved; Cinderella and Yvetta
from English Sugar Beet Seed Company, Gandalf from
Danisco Seeds and Dynamo from Advanta Seeds.
Baron, Chorus, Jessica and Triumph
were removed from the list.
Cinderella is now the highest yielding variety listed,
with a relative adjusted tonnes of 106% of controls. NIAB sugar
beet specialist Simon Kerr said, "It has very high root yields
with average sugar content and low levels of impurities and high
establishment." Yvetta combines a very high sugar content
with above average root yield to give an adjusted tonnes figure
of 102%.
Gandalf has an adjusted tonnes yield of 102%, with very
high root yield and below average sugar content and below
average impurities.
Dynamo, which still has to be accepted onto the National
List, is a rhizomania resistant variety that provides the
highest yields for that group of varieties. Foliar disease
resistance, particularly to rust, is low.
