New initiatives in developing field peas will be the focus of
an industry conference in September 2003.
Department pulse extension officer Ian Pritchard said Field
Pea Focus Western Australia to be held at El Caballo Resort in
Northam would cover all aspects of the field pea industry - from
paddock to plate.
The conference, which includes a field day, will focus on
production issues and the significant advances being made
through research. In addition, an optional third day will be
offered to provide a technical update on field pea agronomy.
Mr Pritchard said the Australian field pea industry had seen
an increase in plantings due to new developments in plant
breeding, research, on-farm management, marketing and
processing.
"Current plant breeding programs are developing varieties
that are more reliable, harvest friendly and adapted to a wider
range of environments," he said.
"The aim of Field Pea Focus 2003 is to provide an opportunity
for industry participants, including field pea farmers,
advisers, researchers, marketers, handlers and processors, to
learn more about these initiatives and ensure continued
development of the industry."
Mr Pritchard said the Western Australia conference would be
co-hosted and co-sponsored by the Department and Pulse
Australia. The Grains Research and Development Corporation is
also a sponsor.
