Monsanto to offer Syngenta seed treatment sorghum fungicide package

Greensboro, North Carolina
September 24, 2003

Monsanto Company will offer Maxim® 4FS and Apron XL® seed treatment fungicides, as well as Concep® III seed safener as their premier sorghum seed treatments for Asgrow® and DEKALB® hybrids for the 2004 planting season. Maxim 4FS and Apron XL provide protection against all major sorghum seedling diseases, including Fusarium and Pythium

“Monsanto’s decision to provide Syngenta seed treatments on Asgrow and DEKALB sorghum was largely influenced by changing cultural practices,” said Dr. Jerry Flint, Monsanto’s U.S. product manager for sorghum, canola, alfalfa and sunflowers. “We have seen a significant increase in conservation tillage practices, making premium seedling disease control more critical for stand establishment. As we move into 2004, we are confident that offering Syngenta’s fungicide package will help our customers achieve consistent disease protection and better performance in the field.”

Labeled for use on more than 200 crops, Maxim 4FS provides protection against seed-borne and soil-borne diseases such as Fusarium and Rhizoctonia, which cause seed decay, damping off and seedling blights. Apron XL complements the performance of Maxim 4FS by providing protection against systemic downy mildews and diseases caused by soil-borne Pythium. Both Maxim 4FS and Apron XL have been registered under the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Reduced Risk” program and are used at significantly lower rates than competitive seed treatments.

“Maxim 4FS and Apron XL are now used on more acres in the United States than any other seed treatment, and have become the standard fungicide package on most crops,” said Mark Jirak, crop manager for Syngenta Seed Treatment. “Besides providing effective, consistent disease protection, they also offer growers improved plantability, better emergence and enhanced early-season vigor.”

Concep III is a seed safener that protects grain and forage sorghum from herbicide injury when using certain acetanilide herbicides for pre-emergent grass and broadleaf weed control.
