Mycogen Seeds offers Nexera 800 Brand canola in United States - High-performance seed meets demand for healthier oils
Indianapolis, Indiana
December 1, 2004

Mycogen Seeds announces the addition of Nexera® 800 Brand canola varieties from Dow AgroSciences to its product lineup for the 2005 growing season. The new canola varieties, available to contract growers for licensed producers of Natreon canola oil, offer growers a way to maintain profitable production while meeting the demands of a health-conscious consumer market.

As the exclusive U.S. source of Nexera canola, Mycogen is offering Nex 824 CL, a medium-height variety that features good standability, good early season vigor and adaptability to mid- and long-season zones.  Also available this year is Nex 830 CL, a medium-tall-height variety with good early season vigor and very good standability. It also adapts well to mid- and long-season zones.  All Nexera canola varieties exhibit exceptional yield and solid agronomic traits, including an “R” rating for blackleg resistance. In a recent North Dakota State University test for blackleg tolerance, Nexera® canola received good scores for resistance, according to Bruce Due, District Agronomist for Mycogen Seeds.

Yield performance in the U.S. has also been positive. “Agronomically, the Nexera 800 Brand canola varieties are showing good yield potential and standability until harvest,” says Due. While market quality tests are still being conducted, Due says initial results look good there as well. “Compared to other varieties, the Nexera products are performing well,” he says.

In addition, innovative trait technologies help ensure Nexera varieties get quick starts, establish vigorous stands and achieve top yields. CLEARFIELD® technology makes Nexera canola tolerant to Beyond herbicide for broad-spectrum grass and broadleaf weed control. Helix XTra seed-applied insecticide protects germinating seeds from flea beetles and diseases such as seed rot and seedborne blackleg.

Nexera Produces Healthier Oils

Faced with increasing demands from consumers for healthier food product choices, food companies are demanding alternatives to current hydrogenated vegetable oils. As a result, processors are demanding oil seeds containing heart-healthier oils. Nexera canola, the exclusive source of Natreon canola oil – a naturally stable oil that can be used without hydrogenation – is a key product to meet these increased demands for healthier oils. Natreon canola oil has no heart-clogging trans-fatty acids and contains low levels of saturated fats when processed.

The healthy oils market is rapidly growing. Natreon canola oil is increasingly in demand around the world due to its many health and oil profile benefits. Growers can expect higher premiums for their Nexera® canola from a growing list of licensed processors.

“With Nexera canola, we are excited to offer growers a product that promotes healthy living and has strong marketability and excellent value,” explains Keith Porter, Marketing Specialist, Mycogen Seeds. “Processors are constantly demanding healthier, more stable oil products, so growers can expect higher premiums for Natreon canola oil, ultimately improving their bottom line. With Nexera canola, growers gain peace of mind knowing they are helping to create a predictable, reliable supply of healthy oils for end-use customers.”
