The Seed Vigour Steering Committee will meet on June 21 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to discuss the latest research results of several promising new seed vigour tests. Current seed vigour tests, while useful, do not give consistent results, says JoAnne Buth, Vice President, Crop Production for the Canola Council.

Dr. Wayne Buckley, research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Centre (AAFC) in Brandon, MB, has developed a test that uses ethanol production of seed to help predict seed vigour. Dr. Bob Elliott, research scientist with the Saskatoon AAFC Centre, has several promising new seed vigour tests.

The committee is a multi-disciplinary industry group that is charged with directing the research and discussion toward development of a consistent and accurate seed vigour test, says Buth.
