Invitation to comment on the Risk Assessment & Risk Management Plan for genetically modified indian mustard: DIR 057/2004

Australia’s Gene Technology Regulator is responsible for administering the national regulatory system designed to protect the health and safety of people and the environment by identifying risks posed by, or as a result of, gene technology and managing those risks.

The Regulator is currently assessing licence application DIR057/2004 for a limited and controlled release of genetically modified (GM) Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) from Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd.

The application proposes to trial herbicide tolerant, hybrid GM Indian mustard on four sites during each of the winter and summer growing seasons of 2005-2008 (maximum area of four hectares per site) in up to 17 shires in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.  The research aims to assess the agronomic performance of GM Indian mustard lines, including comparisons with conventional Indian mustard, GM and conventional canola; produce seed for further evaluation; and examine the effectiveness of the introduced herbicide tolerance trait under Australian field conditions.

The Regulator has prepared a risk assessment and risk management plan (RARMP) for the proposed release including a range of proposed licence conditions (including containment measures) that would be imposed if a licence were issued.

The Regulator invites written submissions on the RARMP in order to finalise the plan.  This document will then form the basis of the Regulator’s decision whether or not to issue the licence.  The consultation RARMP and related documents can be obtained from the OGTR website under ‘What’s New’, or by contacting the Office (see below).  Please quote application number DIR057/2004 in any correspondence.

Submissions should be forwarded by close of business on 19 May 2005.
