Mycogen Seeds releases eight new sunflower hybrids for 2006
Indianapolis, Indiana
August 22, 2005

Mycogen Seeds announces the availability of eight new sunflower hybrids to expand its 2006 sunflower lineup. The eight new hybrids include three Nexera® high-oleic hybrids, four NuSun™ hybrids and one confection sunflower hybrid. Two of these hybrids also have CLEARFIELD® herbicide technology.

“We are excited to offer eight new sunflower hybrids which will help producers meet their sunflower production needs in 2006,” says Keith Porter, Marketing Specialist, Mycogen Seeds. “If growers are producing sunflowers for the oil, bird food or confection markets, we have a hybrid to meet their individual situations.”

New Sunflower Hybrids

8H288DM is a very early season high-oleic hybrid with resistance to all known downy mildew races in the United States. This hybrid is built on a medium-short statured plant that produces good yields of very high oil content seed. 8H288DM will have superior drydown characteristics and will return top dollar per acre.

A very attractive mid-season high-oleic hybrid, 8H350DM has a medium plant height and excellent uniformity. 8H350DM offers resistance to all known downy mildew races in the United States. This hybrid offers a strong agronomic package that includes very good tolerance to premature ripening.

8H419CL is the industry’s first high-oleic hybrid that offers CLEARFIELD® herbicide technology. It has very good plant health characteristics with average oil content. This medium-full season hybrid works well in many planting environments, based upon planting dates. 8H419CL allows for a broader weed control program where weeds such as marshelder and cocklebur have limited sunflower production options.

8N270 is an early-season NuSun version of the industry leading hybrid SF270.  Known for its yield potential, standability and high oil content, this product will work very well for the NuSun oil and bird food markets, and preliminary testing suggests that it may be suitable for the hulling market.

An early-season NuSun hybrid, 8N272 has average oil content that will work well for the NuSun oil and bird food markets. Preliminary tests suggest 8N272 has acceptable hulling characteristics.

A medium to medium-full season hybrid, 8N386CL is a second generation CLEARFIELD hybrid. This NuSun CLEARFIELD hybrid will have good overall plant health with very good stalk and root characteristics. This product will work well for the NuSun oil and bird food markets.

8N453DM is a longer, full season NuSun hybrid that is resistant to all current known races of downy mildew in the United States. It has good yield potential and will serve the NuSun oil market and bird food markets in good fashion in central and southern plains markets.

As a new medium-full maturity confection hybrid, 8C481 will serve the needs of the in-shell market very well. 8C481 has superior seed size and yield capabilities. It is a single-cross hybrid with good uniformity.

“These eight new sunflower hybrids offer growers the latest technologies and traits available for the 2006 growing season,” concludes Porter.
