2004The new large blue pea Cooper from Cebeco Seed
Innovations has been added to the National List after a short
delay with its Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability testing
and can now be commercialised.
The variety has 'break-though' yield levels, with a good
grain size and an estimated 4-year figure of 111% of controls
for yield, compared with market leader Nitouche on 99%. It is
shorter than Nitouche, but its standing ability compares very
favourably so far. Early evidence suggests Cooper has only
moderate downy mildew resistance, and a fungicide seed dressing
may be appropriate for the variety.
As indicated in May’s Landmark article, Cooper has already
been adopted as a Recommended List candidate and will be
considered along with 12 other varieties once this summer’s
trial results have been analysed.
