Mycogen Seeds is excited to
announce its new grain corn hybrids with Herculex® RW
Rootworm Protection for the 2006 growing season. This latest
trait in Mycogen’s portfolio gives growers powerful, season-long
protection against western, northern and Mexican corn rootworm
larvae, including late-season rootworm larval hatches.
Mycogen Seeds
is an affiliate of Dow AgroSciences LLC, one of the trait’s
developers, which recently received confirmation that the
Environmental Protection Agency has accepted registration for
Herculex RW. The trait has also received deregulated status from
the United States Department of Agriculture and successfully
completed the consultation process with the Food and Drug
Administration. Registrations in Canada and other countries as
well as grain import approvals for key export markets, such as
Japan, are also being sought.
“Mycogen Seeds
is very excited to offer growers one more tool in their
pest-protection arsenal. Herculex RW will give growers more
insect protection options and help protect corn plants against
root feeding damage caused by corn rootworm. This latest
addition to Mycogen’s grain corn portfolio reflects our
commitment to provide growers a comprehensive lineup of
top-performing hybrids with the latest in trait and seed
treatment technology,” says Terry Gardner, Marketing Specialist,
Mycogen Seeds.
For the 2006
growing season, Mycogen Seeds will have four hybrids with
Herculex RW Rootworm Protection available to growers.
With a
relative maturity of 102 days, 2D545 has excellent
emergence and early vigor, making it a strong choice for
no-till and early planting. 2D545 has shown very good
performance stability across a wide range of environments.
It offers good tolerance to northern corn leaf blight and
moderate tolerance to gray leaf spot (GLS).
2G675
is a 109-day hybrid that offers excellent yield stability
across a wide range of environments and management
practices. Widely adapted east of the Mississippi River
where the western corn rootworm “soybean variant” is
present.
2J692
is a 110-day, medium-tall hybrid that has broad, very
upright leaves. It produces semi-flex ears with good grain
quality and test weight. 2J692 has good GLS tolerance and
performs well across varying soil types.
A 113-day
hybrid, 2G777 has the same base genetics as our
popular conventional hybrid, 2784, and provides Enhanced
Native Protection™ against European corn borer. 2G777 has
excellent yield, standability, staygreen and late-season
plant integrity. It’s a top choice for corn rootworm
protection across the Corn Belt.
“Herculex RW
has performed very well in field trials, providing consistent
protection in light to heavy rootworm pressure, and in wet or
dry conditions,” says Stephen Smith, Agronomy Services Manager,
Mycogen Seeds.
All of Mycogen
Seeds Herculex® RW hybrids have LibertyLink® technology, which
makes them tolerant to over-the-top applications of LIBERTY®
herbicide.
In addition,
all Mycogen brand Herculex RW hybrids include Cruiser Extreme™
Pak. This seed-applied insecticide protects germinating seed
from damage and stand loss caused by wireworms, seedcorn maggots
and other secondary pests. It also features Maxim® XL, Apron XL®
and Dynasty™ seed treatment fungicides to control a wide disease
spectrum.
Mycogen Seeds
and Dow AgroSciences also anticipate EPA registration of
Herculex® XTRA Insect Protection in the near future.
Mycogen Seeds plans to offer several grain corn hybrids
available with Herculex XTRA, which combines the corn rootworm
protection of Herculex RW with the broad insect protection of
Herculex I Insect Protection – protection against corn
borer, black cutworm, western bean cutworm and other destructive
pests – to give corn growers the broadest-spectrum in-plant
insect protection available.
