Following nearly 40 years at BASF and more than 16 years at the BASF Agricultural Products division, Claus Illing, Director of Regional Business Unit Agricultural Products Europe, will retire during the first quarter of 2006. Illing was instrumental in building the Agricultural Products division into one of the leading companies in the industry. Major recent milestones include the acquisition of American Cyanamid in 2000, as well as integrating the "Fipronil
package" acquired from Bayer into existing business activities.

Klaus Welsch, currently Group Vice President for Global Operations Agricultural Products, will succeed him on 1 February 2006.

As Director of the Region Europe, which accounts for around half of BASF's sales of crop protection agents, Claus Illing successfully promoted and expanded his organization's customer relations. With joint analyses, mutually agreed strategies, an eye for common areas of investment, and a sense of the feasible, Illing laid the foundation for shared achievements. Several years of surveys performed by independent institutes in major European markets show the highest levels of customer satisfaction with BASF crop protection products.

Illing views the global structural changes in the agricultural sector as an opportunity for European farmers. Given the high degree of professionalism and the high levels of productivity of Western European farmers, there is no reason to fear the eastward expansion of the EU. According to Illing, professionalism and good climatic conditions are the best foundation for the European farming industry, and they will continue to ensure that the region competes successfully on international markets in the future as well. Production of renewable raw materials represents an additional opportunity. Illing urges that set aside land not used for food production be used to grow renewable raw materials and fuel. As long as food and fuel production do not compete for available farmland, the necessary flexibility is ensured.

Born in Regensburg in 1944, Claus Illing joined BASF in 1967. Following his training in industrial clerk, he handled a number of different tasks for the company's Eastern European organization. He directed the BASF Romanian office in Bucharest from 1978 to 1982, before returning to Germany to assume responsibility for crop protection
and information systems in the socialist countries. He became Director of the "Products for Agriculture" unit with its fertilizers, crop protection agents, and animal nutrition in 1989, responsible for the markets in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, later expanded to include Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. In his current position as Director of Regional Business Unit Agricultural Products Europe, he oversees activities in the Near and Middle East, the CIS countries, and Africa in addition to the 25 countries of the European Union.

Illing's successor Klaus Welsch, who received a degree in chemical engineering following studies in Germany and Australia, joined the BASF Corporate Engineering Division in 1993. In 1996, he took over Project Management for the BASF/JCIC joint venture in Jilin, China. He was then appointed Vice President for Investment & Strategies Asia
Pacific and moved to Hong Kong. Since 2002, Welsch has been Group Vice President for Global Operations in the Agricultural Products division. He worked at the Mt. Olive site in New Jersey, USA, before moving with the division management to Limburgerhof in 2004.

Neuer Leiter für BASF Pflanzenschutz Europa: Klaus Welsch übernimmt von Claus Illing die Leitung der Regionalen Geschäftseinheit Europa

Nach fast 40 Jahren in der BASF und über 16 Jahren Zugehörigkeit zum Unternehmensbereich Pflanzenschutz wird Claus Illing, Leiter der Regionalen Geschäftseinheit Pflanzenschutz Europa, im ersten Quartal 2006 in den Ruhestand gehen. Illing hatte maßgeblichen Anteil an der Entwicklung des Unternehmensbereichs Pflanzenschutz
zu einem der führenden Unternehmen der Branche. Wichtige Meilensteine in jüngster Zeit war die Akquisition von American Cyanamid im Jahr 2000 und die Integration des von Bayer erworbenen „Fipronil-Pakets“ in das bestehende Geschäft.

Nachfolger wird vom 1. Februar 2006 an Dr. Klaus Welsch, derzeit Group Vice President Global Operations.

Als Leiter der Region Europa, in der die BASF rund die Hälfte Ihres Umsatzes mit Pflanzenschutzmitteln erwirtschaftet, hat Claus Illing erfolgreich die Kundenbeziehungen seiner Organisation gepflegt und ausgebaut. Über gemeinsame Analysen, aufeinander abgestimmte Strategien, dem Verständnis für gemeinsame Investitionsfelder und dem Blick für das Machbare legte er die Grundlagen für den gemeinsamen Erfolg. In wichtigen europäischen Märkten bescheinigen Umfragen unabhängiger Institute seit Jahren dem BASF Pflanzenschutz höchste Kundenzufriedenheit.

Die globalen Strukturveränderungen in der Landwirtschaft begreift Illing für Europas Landwirte als Chance. Angesichts der hohen Professionalität der Unternehmer-Landwirte in Westeuropa und der hohen Produktivität ihrer Betriebe gebe es auch keinen Grund für Panikmache wegen der Osterweiterung der EU. Professionalität und
gute klimatische Bedingungen sind für Illing beste Voraussetzungen für die europäische Landwirtschaft, um auch künftig erfolgreich am internationalen Wettbewerb teilzunehmen. Hinzu kämen die Chancen durch den Anbau nachwachsender Rohstoffe. Illing plädiert dafür, dass das nicht für die Nahrungsmittelproduktion benötigte und stillgelegte Land zum Anbau von den Nachwachsenden Rohstoffen genutzt wird. So lange Nahrung und Energie nicht im Wettbewerb um verfügbare Ackerflächen stehen, sei die notwendige Flexibilität gewährleistet.

Claus Illing, geboren 1944 in Regensburg, trat 1967 in die BASF ein. Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Industriekaufmann übernahm er verschiedene Aufgaben in der Osteuropa-Organisation des Unternehmens. Von 1978 bis 1982 leitete er die Vertretung der BASF für Rumänien in Bukarest, bevor er nach Deutschland zurückkehrte und für den Pflanzenschutz und die Informationssysteme in den sozialistischen Ländern verantwortlich wurde. Im Jahr 1989 wurde Illing Leiter der Einheit „Produkte für die Landwirtschaft“ mit Dünge- und
Pflanzenschutzmitteln sowie Produkten für die Tierernährung und zuständig für die Märkte Deutschland, Österreich und Schweiz, erweitert um die Länder Polen, Tschechien, Slowakei und Ungarn. Zu seiner derzeitigen Funktion als Leiter der Regionalen Geschäftseinheit Pflanzenschutz Europa gehören neben den 25 Ländern der
Europäischen Union auch der Nahe und Mittlere Osten, die CIS-Länder und Afrika.

Illings Nachfolger Welsch studierte Verfahrenstechnik in Deutschland und Australien und trat 1993 in den Bereich Corporate Engineering der BASF ein. Im Jahr 1996 übernahm er das Projekt Management für das BASF/JCIC Joint Venture in Jilin/China. Anschließend wurde er zum Vice President für Investment & Strategies Asia Pacific ernannt und zog nach Hongkong. Seit 2002 ist Welsch im Unternehmensbereich Pflanzenschutz als Group Vice President für Global Operations zuständig. Zunächst war sein Standort Mt. Olive, New Jersey/USA, bevor er 2004 mit der Bereichsleitung nach Limburgerhof umzog.
