A trip to the “Big Watermelon” (a.k.a the “Big Apple”) was the prize and grower Bill Grasmick, of Granada, Colorado, was the lucky winner of the “Give Me Liberty” Sweepstakes from Nunhems, USA.  Mr. Grasmick and a guest will be able to enjoy a fabulous weekend for two in New York City including a trip to Liberty Island to see Lady Liberty herself.

Grasmick was delighted to be chosen at random from entries received from watermelon growers around the country. He plans to take his wife, Lauren, on the trip to New York sometime in mid-June. “We’re pretty excited about it. We just love New York.” They plan to attend at least one Broadway show and enjoy dinner at Tavern on the Green as part of their weekend.  “It is going to be wonderful,” Grasmick says.

The “Give Me Liberty” Sweepstakes was a promotion for Nunhems’ hybrid seedless watermelon variety named Liberty. Nunhems, a global company and leading innovator in the development and production of commercial vegetable seed varieties, believes Liberty is worthy of the attention.

“Liberty has been specially developed to meet the demands of American watermelon consumers and retailers, as well as those of growers operating in diverse farming conditions, “ says Bob Miller, Watermelon Crop Sales Manager for the company.  “Liberty can provide growers with excellent yields and consumers will love the dark red, crisp flesh and high sugar levels.”

Grasmick is the president of Grasmick, Inc., a produce company that grows watermelon, cantaloupe and onion. According to Grasmick, the Liberty variety will be among his watermelon crop this year. Grasmick also grows Nunhems onion varieties and counts on the support he receives from Nunhems. “They have worked with us on finding the varieties that are best suited for our area and have answered questions concerning different types of products,” says Grasmick. “Chris Dyk [a sales specialist for Nunhems], has given me great advice over the years.”

Nunhems, headquartered in The Netherlands, operates with nearly 1,000 employees in 20 countries. The U.S. headquarters are in Parma, Idaho.
