The Department of
Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) has made an
early announcement about the seed trading status of Mandelup
lupins for Western Australia.
Mandelup lupins are the premier lupin variety for
Western Australia. They were released in 2004, and have been
successfully produced and marketed by the licensees.
The Department’s Grains Industry Development
Director David Bowran said the Department normally announced the
seed trading status of the varieties in October every year.
“However, due to the season and the projected
shortage of carry over lupin seed for sowing in 2007, the
Department is making an early announcement to enable growers to
make plans for sourcing Mandelup seed,” Dr Bowran said.
“Growers may undertake farmer to farmer trading
in Mandelup lupins from 31st October this year. This
is limited to Western Australian growers only. Eastern States
growers are still required to purchase seed from the Eastern
States Licensee (Graintrust).
“Growers are reminded of the biosecurity risks of
purchasing seed. Under the Seeds Act all seed sold must be
accompanied by a seed analysis statement. These can be obtained
by submitting a sample to AGWEST Plant Laboratories,” he said.
Dr Bowran said that for the trading status of
other varieties, growers should check the DAFWA website under
Crops, or contact Tresslyn Walmsley, Commercialisation Officer,
DAFWA, ph 0404 819 543.
DAFWA and the
Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) have also
confirmed the End Point Royalty rate of $2.30 for Mandelup in
Western Australia. This includes the collection fee.
Dr Bowran said that End Point Royalties were
payable on the variety at the point of delivery.
Until this harvest no End Point Royalties have
been deducted for Mandelup as the Department and GRDC wanted to
encourage early adoption of the variety.
