Loja, a town half way between
Granada and Málaga, Spain, will accommodate the first centre for
the production and sale of vegetable and corn seed from and for
organic cultivation.
The Andalusian Minister Isaías
Pérez Saldaña and the mayor of Loja Miguel Castellano signed a
contract to launch the project in July.
The Ministry of Agriculture and
Fisheries will provide 50 % of the cost of the 300,000 EUR
project.
The main purpose of the project is
to promote local plant varieties that are well suited to the
climatic and soil conditions. The Andalusian minister took this
opportunity to stress the importance of organic agriculture,
which already covers a growing area of almost half a million
hectares and is still expanding at "spectacular" rates.
