Bayer CropScience announces new formulation in BAYTHROID XL insecticide in the U.S.
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina
February 21, 2006

Better Control Of The Most Damaging Crop Pests

Bayer CropScience announces a new formulation in BAYTHROID ® XL Insecticide, which delivers the pyrethroid control growers have come to expect with strong residual based on multiple trials. BAYTHROID XL is now registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for immediate sale and use within the United States.

“BAYTHROID XL is labeled for the largest number of crops among all pyrethroids, giving growers fast and effective contact control of their primary crop pests plus excellent activity on secondary pests,” said Jon Mixson, Product Manager, Bayer CropScience. “A few of the newly labeled crops include wheat, peanuts and a multitude of new vegetable, orchard and vine crop groups.”

The optimized active ingredient beta-cyfluthrin contains high-performance isomers. The product also features improved end-user flexibility, including a “Warning” signal word, a reduced potential of skin irritation and the most flexible reentry and pre-harvest interval available for most crops .

“The new formulation has a broad spectrum of activity,” Mixson said. “Growers will be pleased with this activity and long-lasting performance, and especially with its quick knockdown performance.”

For all labeled crops, apply BAYTHROID XL when target pests and insect populations reach the low end of insect thresholds, said John Bell, Product Development Manager, Bayer CropScience.

It is important to take into account the stage of pest development and infestation level of each field before an application is made.

“Lower rates are generally adequate for low to moderate insect pressure, but those threshold levels require careful scouting and may require more frequent applications,” Bell continued. “Use higher insecticide rates for moderate and heavy insect pressure.”

BAYTHROID XL is an Emulsifiable Concentrate formulation and controls piercing and sucking pests through contact action and ingestion. Good spray coverage of the crop is needed for the highest level of control.

“Avoid making applications when thorough coverage of the plant is not possible,” Bell said. “Less than thorough coverage may result in slower activity or lower overall control from a single application than an application made with higher gallonages.”

BAYTHROID XL comes in packaging options of one-half gallon, 1 gallon and 15 gallon multiple trip containers.

For tough pest problems, BAYTHROID XL provides an economical solution, which can lead to greater yield and profit.
