Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, New Brunswick, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, announced today a contribution of $590,000 to help launch the Potato Innovation Network (PIN) 2020, a national network geared to new markets and innovative uses for potatoes.
"Canada's new government is a strong supporter of partnerships with industry and stakeholders that help our agriculture and agri-food sector capitalize on new market opportunities," said Mr. Allen. "This contribution reflects the commitment of this government to securing a stronger future for Canada's potato industry."
The Potato Innovation Network (PIN) 2020 will bring together stakeholders in potato science and innovation from across Canada to develop a national strategy and action plan for the development of new and improved potato-based food, bio-medical, and industrial products, as well as enhanced potato industry services.
"The Potato Innovation Network will help the potato industry identify new and innovative products and processes that meet consumer demand," said New Brunswick Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister David Alward. "I'm very pleased that my department initiated the concept and has been active, along with our other provincial partners, in developing the project that will enhance the sustainability of the potato industry across Canada."
BioAtlantech, New Brunswick's lead agency in the development of the life sciences industry, will lead the PIN 2020 project in cooperation with the Canadian Horticultural Council.
"Through the Potato Innovation Network we will be exploring a wide range of options for deriving value from potatoes, and establish the potential for the commercialization of these options," said John Argall, Executive Director of BioAtlantech.
"The Canadian Horticultural Council, through the Potato Committee Executive, supports the PIN 2020 application and looks forward to actively participating in the development and implementation of financially viable and practical innovations identified by the project," said the Council's Executive Vice-President Anne Fowlie.
Additional financial support for PIN 2020 comes from the leading potato-producing provinces of New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island. The industry in these provinces, as well as in Quebec, is also contributing to the project both in kind and financially. The total value of the project is estimated at over $830,000.
"This project has the potential to expand markets for potato products," said Robert Gareau, Executive Director of Potatoes New Brunswick, the province's marketing board. "This is positive news for our growers who are always looking for new opportunities."
AAFC funding falls under the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), Science and Innovation Broker Program. The APF is a federal-provincial-territorial initiative that aims to position Canada as the world leader in food safety, innovation and environmentally responsible agricultural production.

Le Réseau d'innovation 2020 pour l'industrie de la pomme de terre (RIPT 2020) regroupera des intervenants du domaine de la science et de l'innovation de la pomme de terre de partout au Canada afin d'élaborer une stratégie et un plan d'action nationaux pour la mise au point de nouveaux produits alimentaires, biomédicaux et industriels à base de pommes de terre, et de services améliorés pour l'industrie.« Le Réseau d'innovation aidera l'industrie de la pomme de terre à mettre au point des produits et des procédés novateurs qui répondront à la demande des consommateurs, a affirmé M. David Alward, ministre de l'Agriculture, des Pêches et de l'Aquaculture du Nouveau-Brunswick. Je suis très heureux que mon ministère ait mis de l'avant le concept du réseau et qu'il participe activement, avec nos autres partenaires provinciaux, à l'élaboration de ce projet qui vise à améliorer la viabilité de l'industrie de la pomme de terre partout au Canada. »
BioAtlantech, l'organisme responsable du développement de l'industrie des sciences de la vie au Nouveau-Brunswick, dirigera le projet RIPT 2020 en collaboration avec le Conseil canadien de l'horticulture.
« Le RIPT 2020 nous permettra d'étudier un grand nombre d'options pour mettre en valeur la production de pommes de terre et de déterminer le potentiel commercial de ces options», a affirmé M. John Argall, directeur exécutif de BioAtlantech.
« Par l'entremise du Comité exécutif du Comité pour la pomme de terre, le Conseil canadien de l'horticulture appuie la demande du RIPT 2020 et entend participer activement à l'élaboration et à la mise en œuvre des innovations rentables et pratiques cernées par le projet», a ajouté Mme Anne Fowlie, vice présidente exécutive du Conseil.
Les principales provinces productrices de pommes de terre, soit le Nouveau Brunswick, l'Alberta, le Manitoba et l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, fournissent une aide financière supplémentaire au RIPT 2020. Les industries de la pomme de terre de ces provinces et celle du Québec offrent également une contribution en nature et en argent pour ce projet dont la valeur totale est estimée à plus de 830 000 $.
« Le projet laisse entrevoir la possibilité d'élargir les marchés des produits de la pomme de terre, a conclu M. Robert Gareau, directeur général de Pommes de terre Nouveau Brunswick, l'office de commercialisation de la province. Il s'agit là d'une bonne nouvelle pour nos producteurs qui sont constamment en quête de nouveaux débouchés.»
L'aide financière d'AAC provient du Programme de courtage du volet Science et innovation du Cadre stratégique pour l'agriculture (CSA). Le CSA est une initiative fédérale-provinciale-territoriale qui vise à faire du Canada le chef de file mondial de la salubrité des aliments, de l'innovation et de la production agricole respectueuse de l'environnement.
