U.S. EPA approves new uses for BASF's Prowl H2O herbicide
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina
May 10, 2006

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently approved new food tolerances for pendimethalin, the active ingredient in Prowl® H2O herbicide. As a result, the EPA has approved the addition of a variety of new crops to the Prowl H2O herbicide label, including tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts), citrus fruit (such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, lemons and limes), carrots, spearmint and peppermint.

“Prowl H2O is an extremely effective pre-emergent herbicide that controls a wide range of grass and broadleaf weeds in 88 crops,” said Neil Bentley, Pendimethalin Market Manager with BASF. “The establishment of these new
crop tolerances and corresponding food-use approvals provides a valuable new weed control tool for producers of a number of important crops including bearing fruit citrus crops and bearing nut crops.”

“This approval comes as welcome news for tree nut and citrus producers,” said Nader Mahmoud, Trees, Nuts and Vines Market Manager with BASF, “and also for mint growers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah and South
Dakota who had Section 18 approvals for pendimethalin use from 1997 to 2003.”

Prowl H2O is an excellent component for residual weed control in these new crops. An innovative water-based formulation of pendimethalin, Prowl H2O offers exciting new technical benefits over solvent-based formulations. These include superior surface stability, resulting in no incorporation requirement. Additionally, Prowl H2O does not bind to field residue like other formulations, which means more active ingredient available for weed control. Finally, the unique formulation of Prowl H2O delivers superior handling characteristics (low odor, reduced staining, no VOCs) and lower use rates than other pendimethalin formulations.
