The Moldavian Ministry of
Agriculture and Food sees organic production as a key segment
for the future of farmers.
The
government passed a
national concept for organic agriculture and started promoting
this segment as long ago as August 2001.
An Organic Agriculture Act was
passed by parliament on 10 February 2006. This law protects the
terms ‘organic’, ‘biological’ and ‘ecological’ and is very
similar to EU Regulation 2092/91. Organic farms and processors
must register with the Moldavian authorities since 1.4.2006.
According to information from the
three certification bodies – Ecocert (France), BSC (Germany) and
SGS (Switzerland) – there were as many as 87 organic farms with
10,755 ha of certified land at the end of 2005, which
corresponds to 0.5 % of the total agricultural land.
The association ‘EcoProdus’, a
member of IFOAM, co-operates with the ministry in carrying out
training measures for farmers and advisers, e.g. with experts
from EkoConnect.
