Alfalfa growers can now rely on a
cost-effective new weed control option with the recent federal
registration by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency of Prowl® H2O herbicide from
BASF for use in
alfalfa crops.
“Alfalfa is particularly
susceptible to problems with weed control,” said Jon Sweat,
Prowl H2O Market Manager for BASF. “Prowl H2O is an extremely
effective pre-emergent residual herbicide that controls the
weeds and grasses that shorten stand life, hinder yields, and
adversely affect hay quality which alfalfa growers depend on.”
“Prowl H2O provides excellent
residual weed control whether you’re growing a conventional or
glyphosate-tolerant alfalfa crop,” Sweat added. In alfalfa,
Prowl H2O was previously registered for use only on alfalfa
crops grown for seed production. This new label now expands that
to include all alfalfa.
The water-based formulation of
Prowl H2O maximizes its availability for residual weed control
through superior surface stability and reduced binding to field
residue. As a result, Prowl H2O leaves more active ingredient
available for weed control, and is ideally suited for
dependable, broad spectrum weed control for alfalfa.
Alfalfa is the latest addition to
the list of over 90 crops for which Prowl H2O is already
registered, including corn, soybeans, stone fruits, pome fruits,
tree nuts, citrus fruits, cotton, edible beans, peanuts,
potatoes, rice, sunflowers and tobacco among others. Following
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement earlier
this year approving new food tolerances for pendimethalin, the
active ingredient in Prowl H2O, a variety of new crops have been
added to the herbicide’s label.
