In an interim ruling on Friday, October 13, 2006, the Supreme Court of India allowed for field trials of a genetically modified variety of mustard crop, DMH –11, by the Delhi University research team. However, it has directed the team to take precautionary measures for ensuring that the gene does not percolate outside the trail fields.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had restrained the government from approving field trials of genetically modified crops in the country.
