In Canada, commercial chickpea
production started in the mid-1990s and grew rapidly until
reaching its peak of 455,000 tonnes (t) in 2001-2002. For the
next three years production declined, but started recovering in
2005-2006. Canadian exports followed production trends and
Canada became a major exporter of chickpeas, placing among the
top five in the world. The value of Canadian chickpea exports
declined from a high of $83 million (M) in 2001 to $37M in 2005.
For 2006-2007, production and exports are expected to increase
from 2005-2006, and prices are forecast to decrease for the
kabuli type and increase for the desi type. This issue of the
Bi-weekly Bulletin examines the situation and outlook for
chickpeas.
