Executive Summary
In marketing year 2006/2007, sugar
beet and sugar production reached the highest level in 10 years.
This record level of sugar production in marketing year
2006/2007 resulted in an excess supply of sugar. Ukraine does
not export sugar and is unable to consume all of the 2,850,000
tons of raw sugar produced this year. As a consequence, ending
stocks in marketing year 2006/2007 will be highest in the past
10 years. Ukrainian farmers will likely decrease the sugar beet
sown area because of the high stocks and the predicted lower
price of sugar in marketing year 2007/2008. Also, the
profitability of sugar beets is expected to decrease in
marketing year 2007/2008.
