Limited (MMBL) has announced that Bollgard cotton (Bt cotton)
acreage in Andhra Pradesh has increased by 61 percent from 15.9
lakh acres in 2006 to 25.6 lakh acres this year.
Not just in Andhra Pradesh, the last three years (2005-07) have
witnessed a phenomenal increase in Bollgard acreage across the
nine cotton growing States, a MMBL press release said.
Bollgard and Bollgard II hybrids were planted across 3.1 million
acres in 2005. It grew to 8.7 million acres in 2006 and to 14.4
million acres this year. This increase in acreage and number of
farmers adopting Bollgard is testament to the growing success
and acceptance of the technology in India, the company added.
With adoption of Bollgard technology, farmers engaged in cotton
cultivation in Andhra Pradesh earned Rs. 691 crore as additional
income in 2006. Across nine Bt cotton growing states it was Rs.
7,039 crore, the press note said quoting findings of a
nationwide survey conducted by IMRB international.
