Agrisemen B.V. acquires Brussels sprouts program from Seminis

.

Breda, the Netherlands
December 27, 2007

Agrisemen B.V. announced today that it has acquired the Brussels sprout program from Seminis Vegetable Seeds, the largest developer, grower and marketer of fruit and vegetable seeds in the world.

With this step Agrisemen strengthens its position in the Brussels sprout seed market. The Brussels sprouts seed market is a specific market in regional areas. The main growing area is North West Europe (Holland, UK, Poland, Belgium) but Brussels sprouts is growing all over the world, known for its specific taste.

“Whereas the larger vegetable seed companies are concentrating on big vegetable species like tomatoes, peppers, melons, etc., Agrisemen has decided to focus more on smaller, often more regional, vegetable crops, of which Brussels sprouts is a good example” said Jack Burgers, managing director of Agrisemen and he continues: “an important reason to acquire this activity are the present varieties like Esperal and varieties which are in the pipeline. Some of these varieties are more sweet and have better taste than present Brussels sprout varieties, which will attract the younger generation”.

Agrisemen consequently pursues its strategy to further strengthen its portfolio in the vegetable seed business and want to become a niche market player of importance.

Agrisemen B.V. is a small independent vegetable seed company with breeding in brassicas (Brussels sprouts, pointed cabbage), lettuce and climbing beans and with roots that go back t0 1935. The company's goal is to be successful in specific crop where innovation is the key to success. One of its recent innovations is Red Flame, a pointed red cabbage.
