American Seed Trade Association creates first comprehensive Guide to State Seed Regulations
Alexandria, Virginia
January 5, 2007

Today, the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) posted the first comprehensive “Guide to State Seed Regulations.” The electronic ASTA Guide to State Seed Regulations is available at www.amseed.org and provides direct links to key seed trade resources in all 50 U.S states.

“We believe this new tool will prove a valuable resource, not only to our membership, but to state officials who need easy access to a complete collection of their state’s seed rules,” said Andy LaVigne, ASTA CEO and president. “This is the first time the information has been compiled in one location to provide ‘one-stop shopping’ for individuals interested in the seed industry. It is particularly timely as many states begin their legislative sessions and may have seed related issues on their agendas. We believe the Guide will also be useful in promoting the development and growth of state seed markets.”

In addition to seed laws, electronic links to the following information is included for each state:

  • Contact information for the State Department of Agriculture

  • Pertinent state laws and regulations

  • State crop and seed association contacts

  • State Farm Bureau contacts

  • State seed labs and testing services

  • Agricultural mediation or arbitration programs

  • Licensing and permit information and application forms

  • State inspection and certification programs

  • Major state seed programs or initiatives, including foundation seed, native seed and organic certification programs.

Founded in 1883, the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), located in Alexandria, Virginia, is one of the oldest trade organizations in the United States. Its membership consists of about 850 companies involved in seed production and distribution, plant breeding, and related industries in North America. As an authority on plant germplasm, ASTA advocates science and policy issues of industry importance. Its mission is to enhance the development and free movement of quality seed worldwide.
