Increased demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel revolutionizes the farming industry
Lansing, Michigan
January 8, 2007

America’s farmers are sowing the seeds for the future, and that doesn’t mean just creating a steady, available food supply. The growing demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel is creating a growing need for genetics and biotechnology.

The importance of genetics, the bio-economy and the future are what Dean Oestreich, president of Pioneer and vice president, general manager of DuPont, discussed during his keynote address at the Michigan Agri-Business Association Winter Conference today.

The conference provides the state’s agriculture industry with the latest information about everything from crop nutrition and pest management to the economic condition of Michigan agriculture.

“When it comes to the agricultural economy, this is an incredible time of opportunity as consumer demand for food, feed, fiber and fuel – all of which can be produced through agriculture – have increased,” Oestreich said. “Biotechnology provides us with the tools to develop specific products to meet the end use needs for our customers’ crop."

Oestreich’s presentation illustrated how DuPont, through its subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., is focused on an aggressive R&D strategy in which it is leveraging elite genetics, biotechnology and chemistry to create a rich and balanced product pipeline. This pipeline is rapidly creating seed products and game-changing solutions for the entire food and energy value chain and, ultimately, consumers.

Examples of how the pipeline has come to life for consumers, such as through the creation of healthier oils; stain-resistant and stretch-recoverable fabrics; and environmentally friendly, domestically developed fuels were also presented.

Pioneer has a strong presence in Michigan. It operates a research center in Ithaca, a supply management location in Constantine, and has more than 80 sales people in the state.

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., a subsidiary of DuPont, is the world’s leading source of customized solutions for farmers, livestock producers and grain and oilseed processors.

DuPont is a science-based products and services company. Founded in 1802, DuPont puts science to work by creating sustainable solutions essential to better, safer, healthier lives for people everywhere.
