Community in Western Australia asked to look out for Noogoora Burr seed

.

South Perth, Western Australia
June 28, 2007

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia is urging the community to be on the lookout for Noogoora Burr seed, following recent discoveries in Perth and the Gascoyne region.

Department invasive species manager Damian Collopy said burr seeds were found in a brand new bathroom sponge and a newly purchased sports bag, both believed to have been imported from China.

Mr Collopy thanked the individuals involved for their prompt action in reporting the burr.

“Noogoora Burr is a declared plant in Western Australia. It may not be brought into the State and landholders in areas south of the Kimberley must destroy any plants present,” he said

“In seedling stage Noogoora Burr is poisonous to stock and the dry burrs may cause discomfort and injury, particularly to sheep.

“The weed's growth can sometimes be so dense that cattle and sheep cannot get to watering places.”

Anyone finding Noogoora Burr seed should immediately report it to the Department’s Pest and Disease Information Service on freecall 1800 084 881.

Detailed information on Noogoora Burr is available from local Department of Agriculture and Food offices, or on the Department website at www.agric.wa.gov.au
