California cotton growers can now
use Trimax® Pro insecticide from
Bayer CropScience
to control a broad spectrum of piercing and sucking insects. The
product recently received approval from the California
Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR).
Cotton producers have used Trimax Pro elsewhere in the Cotton
Belt in 2006 for control of plant bugs, aphids, fleahoppers,
whiteflies and other piercing/sucking insects while keeping
beneficial insects in the field. Jon Mixson, Bayer CropScience
product manager, said Trimax Pro is a good option for cotton
growers faced with these insect pests.
“Trimax Pro not only has a broad spectrum of control, but it is
also formulated in a way that maximizes that control,” Mixson
said.
Bayer personnel in California have achieved best results by
applying Trimax Pro at square initiation with a second
application 10 to 20 days later. Timing the applications this
way has led to an average yield response of 100 pounds per acre
from Kern County to the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley,
Mixson said.
“With this timing, Trimax Pro can go out with the layby miticide
on either the first or the second application,” he added.
The product penetrates easily into plant tissues, which can
result in higher efficacy depending on target pests and
leaf-surface condition. It also features a suspension
concentrate formulation, meaning Trimax Pro remains in
suspension longer, which results in less tank settling.
“There’s a lot of interesting science behind Trimax Pro, but
growers really just need to know that they can depend on it for
consistent performance and control of key piercing and sucking
insects, including lygus and aphids,” Mixson said.
For 2007, Bayer CropScience plans to conduct additional trials
in California that explore whether using Trimax Pro reduces
plant stress. Growers interested in learning more should contact
their local retailer or Bayer CropScience sales representative,
