New University of California studies examine production costs for 10 crops

.

Davis, California
May 1, 2007

The University of California, Davis, has released ten new cost-of-production studies for growing asparagus, tomatoes, alfalfa hay, grain hay, grapes, almonds and walnuts.

Each analysis is based upon a hypothetical farm operation using practices common in the region. UC Cooperative Extension farm advisors, researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, industry consultants and other agricultural associates provided input and reviews. Assumptions used to identify current costs for the individual crops, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead are described.

An analysis table shows profits over a range of prices and yields. Other tables show the monthly cash costs, the costs and returns per acre, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment, and business overhead costs.

The new cost studies are:

  • Sample Costs to Establish and Produce Asparagus, San Joaquin Valley--North
  • Sample Costs to Produce Processing Tomatoes, Direct Seeded, Sacramento Valley
  • Sample Costs to Produce Processing Tomatoes, Transplanted, Sacramento Valley
  • Sample Costs to Establish and Produce Alfalfa Hay, Center Pivot Irrigation, Intermountain Region
  • Sample Costs to Establish and Produce Alfalfa Hay, Mixed Irrigation, Intermountain Region
  • Sample Costs to Produce Grain Hay, Intermountain Region
  • Sample Costs to Produce Grapes for Concentrate, Thompson Seedless, San Joaquin Valley--South
  • Sample Costs to Establish and Produce Grapes for Concentrate, Spur Pruned Varieties, San Joaquin Valley--South
  • Sample Costs to Produce Organic Almonds, San Joaquin Valley--North
  • Sample Costs to Produce English Walnuts on 100, 20, and 5 Acre Orchards, Sacramento Valley

UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics extension specialist Karen Klonsky and UC Davis research associates Richard De Moura and Pete Livingston prepared the studies. UCCE farm advisors who contributed to the individual studies were Brenna Aegerter of San Joaquin County, Gene Miyao of Yolo, Solano, and Sacramento counties, Steve Orloff of Siskiyou County, William Peacock of Tulare County, Stephen Vasquez of Fresno County, Brent Holtz of Madera County, Roger Duncan of Stanislaus County, Paul Verdegaal of San Joaquin County, and Janine Hasey of Sutter and Yuba counties.

The cost studies are available online at http://coststudies.ucdavis.edu, at county UCCE offices, by mail from the University of California, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, One Shields Ave., Davis, CA 95616; or may be requested by calling (530) 752-1517. Internet downloads are free. There is a $3 handling fee for each mailed report.
