Changes to 2008 CLEARFIELD production system for wheat add additional value for Canadian growers

.

Winnipeg, manitoba, Canada
November 7, 2007

BASF is adding more value to the CLEARFIELD® Production System for Wheat for the 2008 season by giving growers greater flexibility to save and re-grow seed, together with new offers that will allow growers to realize even greater value from wheat production.

"2008 will be an exciting year for CLEARFIELD wheat growers," says Scott Chapman, CLEARFIELD Brand Manager, BASF Canada. "We’re expanding our grower offers and providing producers with greater flexibility around the production of CLEARFIELD wheat. These new advantages, combined with the unsurpassed weed control of ALTITUDE FX® provide growers with a simplified production process and a better overall opportunity to profit in wheat."

For 2008, growers will continue to be required to make initial certified CDC Imagine wheat seed purchases when growing a CLEARFIELD wheat crop for the first time. However, growers can now use this seed to produce and grow unlimited quantities in subsequent years. CLEARFIELD wheat growers will still be required to sign a CLEARFIELD Commitment and complete CLEARFIELD Confirm testing for wheat grown on an annual basis, whether certified or saved seed, to help ensure that seed meets the required tolerance to CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides. Additional terms of the CLEARFIELD Production System for Wheat include a requirement that CLEARFIELD wheat growers not sell or give saved CLEARFIELD wheat seed to anyone else and that they use a registered BASF herbicide on the crop. Starting in 2008, production contracts will no longer be required as part of the CLEARFIELD Production System for Wheat.

BASF is also introducing two additional ways for growers to realize even greater value from the CLEARFIELD Production System for Wheat. First, savings and rewards on wheat products are now available through the GrowForwardTM Rewards Program, which gives growers the opportunity to earn savings of up to 14 per cent on CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides, and 22 per cent on HEADLINE® fungicide.

Second, the CLEARFIELD AdvantageTM*, announced earlier this summer, also includes value-added benefits for CLEARFIELD wheat growers, including the CLEARFIELD Seed Protection Advantage – $1 per acre off GEMINITM and CHARTER® seed treatments on all cereal acres with a minimum 150 acre purchase of any CLEARFIELD crop(s) – and the CLEARFIELD ONE-PASS Advantage – premium re-spray in the event of broadleaf weed control escapes with ALTITUDE FX.

CLEARFIELD wheat variety CDC Imagine will be available exclusively from VITERRATM retail outlets for the 2008 season. As a recognized non-genetically-engineered wheat, it offer growers the same marketing opportunities as non-HT wheat varieties with no restrictions.

"The biggest advantage of CLEARFIELD wheat is the weed control capabilities of the system. With the use of CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides, growers have the opportunity to produce the cleanest wheat, anytime and in any field," says Chapman.

Registered CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides – ALTITUDE FX and ADRENALIN® SC – provide effective, one-pass control of key broadleaf and grassy weeds, including volunteer barley and other volunteer cereals in wheat. The broad-spectrum grass and broadleaf weed control of ALTITUDE FX allows growers to clean up problem, heavily weed infested fields, including newly rented land or fields with kochia problems. The herbicides also provide a new herbicide group option, allowing growers to rotate out of Group 1 products in cereal crops.
