DuPont and its Pioneer
Hi-Bred business congratulate Kip Cullers of Purdy, Missouri
for setting a new world record in soybean production at 154
bushels per acre, 15 bushels higher than the record Cullers set
in 2006. Cullers achieved this with Pioneer(R) brand soybean
variety 94M80 in his winning entry for the Missouri Soybean
Association yield contest.
"We applaud Mr. Cullers on demonstrating the yield potential in
today's elite soybean varieties," said Paul Schickler, DuPont
vice president and general manager and president of Pioneer
Hi-Bred. "Combining effective management practices with the
latest soybean genetics is key to ensuring we are able to meet
the growing demand for soybeans as food and fuel. Cullers'
achievement provides an opportunity to see how genetics and crop
management play a role in higher yields and to share information
that may help other growers increase their productivity.
Boosting Soybean Yields
"Cullers' achievement further demonstrates the advances Pioneer
has made in developing and producing soybeans with higher yield
potential," said Schickler. "Surpassing the 100-bushel-per-acre
mark has become a more common occurrence as new technologies
allow researchers to develop products with a complete package of
offensive and defensive characteristics."
DuPont recently announced the commercialization of soybean
varieties using a technology that increases yields by as much as
12 percent per acre. This technology - called Accelerated Yield
Technology(TM) (AYT) - uses proprietary molecular breeding
techniques to rapidly scan and identify genes that increase
yield and then incorporates them into elite soybean genetics.
For more than a decade, Pioneer has been using its proprietary
marker-assisted selection (MAS) technology to identify genes for
disease- and pest-resistant traits to bring new products to
market faster for growers.
"Full implementation of AYT, combined with molecular breeding
technologies such as MAS, will enable us to make a new class of
soybeans that has unprecedented yield potential for growers like
Kip and others planting Pioneer soybeans," said Schickler.
94M80 is a late Group IV soybean variety with excellent harvest
standability and tolerance to soybean sudden death syndrome
(SDS). The variety also is resistant to soybean cyst nematode
(SCN) and contains the Roundup Ready(R) gene. The SCN resistance
was developed using Pioneer's proprietary marker-assisted
selection technology to more efficiently identify and develop
such traits.
