Science seen boosting crop yields
Science and technology have a key role to play in the country's
agricultural growth and ensuring food sector, experts have said.
Yuan Longping, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and
also known as the "father of hybrid rice", said the latest phase
of research and development into high-yield super hybrid rice is
expected to reach a successful conclusion soon.
Third-generation super hybrid rice is expected to yield about
900 kg per mu (670 sq m) by the end of 2010, Yuan said at a
forum on agriculture development in Hunan Province, the Changsha
Evening News reported yesterday.
"Trial planting projects are in place in 20 counties in Hunan
and so far, 18 have reported successful results," he said.
"If we can expand the growing area for super hybrid rice to 4
million hectares, the additional output will be sufficient to
feed 30 million people," he said.
In 2000, phase one saw the rice yield hit 700 kg per mu, while
in 2004, the second phase took it to 800 kg. In the future, the
rice could yield as much as 1,500 kg per mu, scientists have
said.

réalisé en l'an 2000;
surfaces;
surfaces.
