Joint collaboration will bring alternative herbicide tolerant
systems and more choice for farmers in weed management

Mertec LLC and M.S. Technologies LLC announced today that they
have entered into a longterm collaboration agreement to jointly
develop and commercialize several innovative trait technology
products in soybeans. These products are destined for the U.S.
market with the opportunity to expand to other soybean growing
countries.
Under this agreement Bayer CropScience and M.S. Technologies
will combine proprietary technologies and will make them
available for insertion into high-yielding elite germplasm
contributed by Mertec LLC. The agreement allows for resulting
traits and products to be broadly licensed to the seed industry.
BayerCropScience will undertake to obtain the necessary global
authorizations for the soybean traits developed under the
collaboration agreement and to obtain approvals for the
associated herbicide use.
Financial details of the agreement are not disclosed.
One of the first products expected from the collaboration will
be soybean varieties with tolerance to both glyphosate and to
HPPD inhibitors, a class of herbicides that include Bayer’s
Balance® Pro brand isoxaflutole, currently used in corn in the
United States. The combination of HPPD inhibitors tolerance plus
glyphosate tolerance will offer growers flexibility in their
herbicide choices, with the herbicide combination offering the
potential for one pass weed control as well as effective weed
resistance management.
These products are expected to be followed by other multi-trait
combinations, including a triple herbicide tolerant stack with
LibertyLink®, thus further broadening choices for farmers.

The collaboration builds on the existing relationship between
Bayer CropScience and MS Technologies, a key partner in the
development of Bayer CropScience’s LibertyLink herbicide
tolerant trait in soybeans. As a result of this already existing
cooperation, LibertyLink soybeans are planned to be be
introduced to the market in 2009. LibertyLink will be the only
alternative non-selective herbicide tolerant system enabling
growers to maintain current production practices but rotate weed
management systems in order to avoid weed resistance.

Neue Alternativen bei der
Herbizidwahl und flexiblere Unkrautbekämpfung für Landwirte
Monheim, 26. November 2007 - Die Bayer CropScience AG, die
Mertec LLC und die M.S. Technologies LLC haben eine langfristige
Kooperationsvereinbarung zur gemeinsamen Entwicklung und
Vermarktung von Saatgut-Technologie
(Traits) für neue Sojabohnensorten geschlossen. Die Produkte
sind für den US-amerikanischen Sojamarkt bestimmt mit der
Option, sie später auch in anderen Sojaanbauländern zu
verkaufen.
Gemäß der Vereinbarung werden Bayer CropScience und M.S.
Technologies ihre jeweiligen Technologien zusammenbringen und
sie für den Einsatz in ertragreichem, von Mertec LLC geliefertem
Elite-Keimplasma (Germplasm) zur Verfügung stellen. Dieses
bietet den Ausgangspunkt für die Züchtung neuer
Sojabohnensorten. Die Produkte aus der Kooperation sollen der
Saatgutindustrie auf breiter Basis in Lizenz angeboten werden.
Bayer CropScience wird die erforderlichen weltweiten
Genehmigungen sowohl für die Soja-Traits als auch für die
entsprechenden Herbizide beantragen.
Finanzielle Details der Vereinbarung werden nicht bekannt
gegeben.
Zu den ersten Produkten aus dieser Kooperation sollen Sojasorten
gehören, die sowohl eine Toleranz gegenüber dem Wirkstoff
Glyphosat als auch gegenüber HPPD-Hemmern aufweisen. Bei
Letzeren handelt es sich um eine Herbizidklasse, zu der unter
anderem der Wirkstoff Isoxaflutol der Bayer-Marke Balance® Pro
gehört. Er wird derzeit in den USA bei Mais eingesetzt. Die
Kombination von Toleranzen sowohl gegen HPPD-Hemmer wie auch
Glyphosat bietet den Landwirten mehr Flexibilität bei der
Auswahl des Herbizids. Die Unkrautbekämpfung kann in einem
Arbeitsgang erfolgen, und der Zugriff auf zwei Herbizide
unterschiedlicher chemischer Wirkstoffklassen erlaubt ein
effektives Unkrautresistenz-Management.
Im Rahmen dieser Zusammenarbeit soll auch weiteres neues Saatgut
für Sojabohnen mit zwei oder mehr Herbizidtoleranzen entwickelt
werden. Geplant ist eine Kombination von Toleranzen gegen
Glyphosat, HPPD-Hemmer und Liberty®, ein Herbizid von Bayer
CropScience. Damit wird die Flexibilität der Landwirte in der
Auswahl des Herbizids noch weiter erhöht.

Bayer CropScience und MS Technologies arbeiten bereits bei der
Entwicklung von Sojabohnensaatgut mit Toleranz gegen das
Herbizid Liberty zusammen. Im Rahmen dieser Kooperation soll
LibertyLink-Soja 2009 auf den Markt gebracht werden. Der Trait
LibertyLink in Kombination mit dem nicht-selektiven Herbizid
Liberty wird dann die einzige Alternative zum derzeit bei
Sojabohnen genutzten System sein. Sobald LibertyLink-Sojasaatgut
auf dem Markt ist, haben die Landwirte die Möglichkeit, in
Rotation zwei Unkrautbekämpfungssysteme anzuwenden, um
Resistenzen zu vermeiden.
