The government-owned
National Seed Corporation (NSC) has joined hands with
multinational firm
Monsanto India Ltd (MIL), to market its hybrid corn seed.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) early
this month with MIL to market and distribute 200 tonnes of
hybrid corn seed this year.
NSC has identified two varieties of seeds - Dekalb Double
(70001) and Dekalb Prabal (1562) and plans to distribute these
seeds through 81 direct-sale counters and 2,700 dealers spread
across the country.
"The unique selling point of these two varieties is its high
yield potential. Besides this, these varieties are tried and
tested by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)." NSC
Chairman and Managing Director B B Pattanaik said.
As per the MoU, Monsanto, which produces hybrid seeds and
herbicides, will produce, process and package the corn seeds
under its brand. The packages will also bear the logo of NSC and
its marketing description, said the CMD.
"NSC and Monsanto will decide the net selling price by mutual
discussion in the coming days," he added. The MoU valid for a
year is an excellent example of public-private- partnership in
the seeds production and marketing sector, Pattanaik said.
Dekalb Double (70001) is a water-logging and drought resistant
seed, ideally suited for Kharif season. It has the potential to
increase the yield up to 82 quintal per hectares against 75
quintal per hectare from other variety seeds. It is a flexible
hybrid seed that has maturity duration of 95 days.
Whereas Dekalb Prabal (1562) variety can produce high yield of
92 quintal per hectare compared to 87 quintal per hectare from
other varieties. It is a highly stable and full season seed that
has excellent tip filling.
