The
Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture
(IICA) and Croplife Latin
America signed a general cooperation agreement on September
11 aimed at promoting the transfer of technology that will
benefit farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Christopher Hansen, IICA’s Assistant Deputy Director General for
Strategic Partnerships, and Alfredo Ruiz, President of Croplife
Latin America, signed the agreement, which calls for distance
and on-site seminars, structured workshops and fora, scholarship
and internship programs, technological tours, research projects
and the promotion of experiences in the transfer of “best
practices.”
At the signing ceremony, IICA Director General Chelston
Brathwaite, referring to this first step in a new joint effort,
underscored the important role science and technology play in
agriculture and the need to ensure that any agreements signed by
the Institute benefit farmers in the hemisphere.
For his part, the President of Croplife Latin America focused on
his organization’s efforts to educate farmers in the proper use
of crop protection products, and noted that agreements had
already been signed with other international organizations,
including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP), the International Fund for
Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA).
The two-year, renewable agreement with IICA calls for both
organizations to assign staff to program, execute and monitor
any training, research and dissemination programs agreed upon,
all of which will be backed by specific agreements.
Also, both institutions will appoint a working group responsible
for negotiating and drawing up the work agenda. Croplife
International represents the crop science industry, which
conducts research and invents, develops, manufactures and sells
agrochemical and biotechnological products and services with a
view to making agriculture more productive and competitive,
within the framework of sustainable development.

CropLife suman esfuerzos para mejorar
la productividad agrícola
CropLife Latin America y el Instituto Interamericano de
Cooperación para la Agricultura, IICA, firmaron el 11 de
septiembre un acuerdo de cooperación para promover la
transferencia de tecnología y mejorar la competitividad de los
productores agrícolas de América Latina y el Caribe.
El acuerdo firmado por Alfredo Ruiz, Presidente de CropLife
Latin America y Christopher Hansen, Subdirector General Ajdunto
para las Alianzas Estratégicas del IICA, facilita el intercambio
de información y la realización de investigaciones, estudios y
análisis en el área de la biotecnología, y en otros temas de
interés común; e incluye el desarrollo de programas de
capacitación con seminarios a distancia y presenciales, talleres
y foros estructurados, programas de becas y pasantías, giras
tecnológicas, investigaciones y la promoción de experiencias
para transferir prácticas sobre el Manejo Responsable de los
productos para la protección de cultivos.
Todos estos esfuerzos dirigidos a mejorar la productividad
agrícola dentro de un marco sostenible van dirigidos a
productores campesinos, entidades gremiales representativas de
los sectores campesinos, funcionarios del gobierno, del sector
técnico- académico y de entidades no gubernamentales.
En la ceremonia de la firma, Alfredo Ruiz, Presidente de
CropLife Latin America destacó la gestión del Programa de Manejo
Responsable de los agroquímicos en la región y la importancia
que tiene la participación de otros sectores de la cadena
productiva y de organizaciones internacionales como el IICA.
Finalmente mencionó los convenios que CropLife ha firmado como
el del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza, WWF, y con la Agencia
AMbiental de los Estados Unidos, EPA.
A la ceremonia asistió el Director General del IICA, Chelston
Brathwaite, quien realzó la importancia de la ciencia y la
tecnología en la agricultura; describió ese momento como el
comienzo de un trabajo conjunto, al señalar la importancia de
que los acuerdos suscritos por el Instituto generen resultados
en beneficio de los agricultores del hemisferio.
