INVITATION TO COMMENT
CONSULTATION RARMP FOR LICENCE APPLICATION DIR 077/2007
FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE
Limited and Controlled Release of Genetically Modified Wheat and Barley

Australia’s gene technology regulatory system is designed to protect the health and safety of people and the environment by identifying risks posed by, or as a result of, gene technology and managing those risks.

The Gene Technology Regulator is currently assessing Licence Application DIR 077/2007 from The University of Adelaide for a limited and controlled release to undertake proof of concept research with up to 30 wheat and barley lines genetically modified for enhanced tolerance to different environmental stressors, such as high soil boron levels or drought, or for increased dietary fibre.

The purpose of the release is to assess the agronomic performance of the lines under field conditions, and to obtain tissue samples for subsequent analysis. Some seed will be saved for possible future trials of promising lines, subject to further approval(s). The release is proposed to take place at one site in the shire of Marion, South Australia on a total area of up to 400 m2 between June 2008 and June 2009.

The Regulator has prepared a consultation Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP), which concludes that the release would not pose a significant risk to human health and safety or to the environment. A range of licence conditions are proposed, including measures to restrict the release to the size, location and duration requested by The University of Adelaide.

The Regulator welcomes written submissions in order to finalise the RARMP, which will then form the basis of her decision on whether to issue the licence. The consultation RARMP and related documents can be obtained from the website <http://www.ogtr.gov.au> under ‘What’s New’ or by contacting the Office. Please quote application DIR 077/2007 in any correspondence.
Submissions should be received by close of business on 16 May 2008.
