Weed management preserves corn yield potential - U.S. growers boost their potential return-on-investment with a two-pass program from Bayer CropScience

Corn, soybean and cereals growers know that weed control is a good practice. But weed management is even better.

Weed management means addressing weeds before they cause significant economic impact in your corn fields—not simply eliminating weeds, regardless of size or type.

Applying a pre-emergence product, such as Balance®Pro herbicide, as part of a two-pass program means weeds won’t compete with your corn crop for essential nutrients, water and light that would maximize yield potential.

Balance Pro, from Bayer CropScience, controls more than 50 broadleaf weeds and grasses, including: woolly cupgrass, waterhemp, lambsquarters and velvetleaf. With the power of Recharge™, Balance Pro controls emerged weeds up to 2 inches tall with just a half-inch of rain.

“Once weeds begin to deprive the crop of resources [essential for plant growth], the yield potential can be negatively impacted,” according to a weed management study released by Iowa State University. “With today’s effective herbicides, application timings should be based not only on the ability of a herbicide to kill weeds, but also on the weeds’ potential to impact yields early in the growing season.”

Because timing is so critical, most weed scientists recommend growers use a pre-emergence herbicide to address weed control early and provide some residual, which also can help widen the window of application timing for post herbicides.

Jeff Springsteen, Bayer CropScience marketing manager for corn herbicides, including Balance Pro and Laudis™ herbicides, agrees that an early preplant or preemergence herbicide application is an effective and economical way to help corn growers eliminate weeds early and preserve yield potential.

“Corn yield losses from weed competition can start by the time some weeds are less than 4 inches tall,” says Springsteen. “Balance Pro puts another active ingredient in growers’ fields to knock out broadleaf weeds and grasses early; plus, another mode of action can contribute to weed resistance management.”

He notes that field trials prove that Balance Pro followed by a postemergence application of Liberty® herbicide or Laudis herbicide virtually eliminates tough broadleaf weeds and grasses, such as pigweeds, kochia, marestail, waterhemp, barnyardgrass and shattercane from a corn crop.

Balance Pro alone, when tankmixed with atrazine, can control early weed competition by reducing numbers, size and vigor, ultimately enhancing the performance of Roundup® for total weed control in a corn crop.

In addition, the flexibility of Balance Pro enables it to work in traditional herbicide programs. Growers can apply the product for burndown, or as early pre-plant, pre-plant incorporated or pre-emergence applications.
