As weed resistance increases, cotton growers look for new control methods - FiberMax LibertyLink cotton seed varieties keep yield and profit potential high

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina
April 22, 2008

As weed resistance casts a wider net over the Cotton Belt, growers are turning to different methods of control. Joe Mencer, a cotton grower from Lake Village, Ark., battles resistant weeds with Ignite® herbicide over-the-top of his FiberMax® LibertyLink® cotton seed varieties. He grew approximately 300 acres of FM 955LLB2 in 2007.
“We decided on Ignite to combat resistant Palmer amaranth,” he said. “When we previously were in the Roundup Ready program, we made multiple applications, and it seemed like all we were doing was slowing resistant weeds down, but we never killed the plants. They always came back stronger than before.”

Mencer said once they made the switch to Ignite, they controlled Palmer amaranth and other problem weeds.
Don Johnson, a consultant based in Cabot, Ark., focused on weed species such as morningglories with Ignite because of its reputation for effective control of those weeds.

“Ignite has very good control of the morningglory group,” he said. “Those weeds are difficult to control using a glyphosate herbicide. Ignite fits in well as a resistance management tool for weeds we see popping up.”
Johnson said his FiberMax varieties also deliver exceptional fiber quality. They had an excellent staple length, which gave him better grades and a premium on the price.

Andy Hurst, Ignite and LibertyLink product manager, said because Ignite has broad-spectrum weed control without resistance concerns, it gives growers a nonselective alternative to glyphosate.

“Ignite gives growers a versatile option that controls more than 120 key grasses and broadleaf weeds without the need to use glyphosate,” he said. “This control complements the high-yield, high-grade potential of FiberMax varieties.”
