CDC Imagine CLEARFIELD wheat seed tops 2008 Northlands Pedigreed Seed Competition in Alberta, Canada

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
April 22, 2008

BASF Canada congratulates Allan Sandau of Scandia, Alberta, for winning the Grand Champion Wheat class at the 2008 Northlands Pedigreed Seed Show with his sample of CDC Imagine CLEARFIELD® wheat seed.

“It makes a person feel good to know that the extra hard work, the diligence you’re doing out in the field is paying off,” says Allan Sandau, who operates a mixed livestock and pedigreed alfalfa and cereal seed farm with his son Trevor. Sandau, who has been growing pedigreed CDC Imagine seed for four years, says CDC Imagine “is a nice variety, it doesn’t grow that tall, it doesn’t lodge and the protein is very good.”

The Northlands Pedigreed Seed Show featured more than one winning CDC Imagine seed entry this year. In the hard red spring wheat class, CDC Imagine placed first and third with entries submitted by Allan Sandau of Scandia, Alberta, and Sandeland Ag of Lomond, Alberta, respectively. Sandau’s class-winning CDC Imagine sample was also awarded top honours as the Grand Champion wheat entry, which was selected from all winning entries in four wheat classes: hard red spring; hard white spring; Canadian prairie spring; and durum, winter, extra strong wheats, rye and triticale. Thirteen hard red spring and 30 overall wheat seed entries competed in this year’s Pedigreed Seed Show.

“I looked at information I have from some of the seed shows for the last four or five years, and CDC Imagine has placed in the top five a number of times. We’ve come pretty close before so I was pleasantly surprised when it won,” says Pierre Hucl, spring wheat breeder at the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre. “It’s a variety that’s well-suited to Alberta and the dark brown soil zone of Saskatchewan, so the fact that it won in Alberta makes sense.“

The CLEARFIELD System for Wheat is the only herbicide-tolerant wheat system available in Canada, and allows growers to grow clean wheat on any field in any rotation, even after barley. CDC Imagine is the first variety developed for the CLEARFIELD wheat system and is valued for its strong agronomics and high yield potential – 103 to 105 per cent of AC Barrie. It’s a medium-maturity variety that is characterized by excellent lodging resistance, above-average protein and consistent milling characteristics. CDC Imagine has been bred for tolerance to ALTITUDE FX® and ADRENALIN® SC, custom-developed CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides which provide broad-spectrum control of many problem broadleaf weeds, including Group 2 resistant varieties, and key grassy weeds such as volunteer barley and Group 1 resistant grasses. CLEARFIELD wheat is recognized worldwide as non-genetically modified, so there are no marketing barriers and no need for growers to segregate their crop.

Now in its 25th year, the Northlands Pedigreed Seed Show is administered by a committee of volunteer pedigreed seed growers, seed producers, representatives from seed and crop protection companies, and regulatory personnel in the seed industry. Open to pedigreed seed growers from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, seed entered in this year’s show must have been from 2007 pedigreed seed production grown on the entrant’s farm, and must be accompanied by an official germination crop certificate number with its grade indicated. Wheat samples were judged on cleanliness, appearance, seed size, colour, uniformity and freedom from weed seeds.

CDC Imagine CLEARFIELD wheat seed is broadly available at Viterra™ locations across the prairies for the 2008 growing season.
