THE SYMPOSIUM

There have been major changes in arable and horticultural production over the last few years with a greater emphasis on the justification of crop protection management and more effective use of good husbandry techniques both for seed protection and production.

Since the third BCPC Symposium on seed health and treatment held in 2001, there has been more information available on the technology of treatment, the interpretation of seed testing, the technology of seed testing and sampling of seeds and production methods which lessen the risk of pest or pathogen attack.

This Symposium will examine these developments as well as the effects of current and future legislation both in the UK and Europe.

In detail, sessions in the Symposium will cover:

• Seed production for healthy seed
– Implications for organic production
– Implications for climate change
– Pathogen and pest problems and control
• Seed sampling and testing
– Methodology
– Seed quality
– Germination, health and vigour
• Treatment and seed processing
– Pesticides
– Biologicals
– Application technology and quality
– Seed enhancement (priming etc)
– Efficacy and storage
– Legislation
• Interpretation of results and understanding the risks
– Modelling
– Epidemiology

Platform presentations will be given by a selection of expert invited speakers accompanied by papers offered by authors on subjects relevant to the Symposium. There will also be a complimentary poster session.

OFFERS OF PAPERS AND POSTERS SOUGHT

Offers of papers for presentation in any of the sessions in the Symposium are sought. You may offer your presentation as a verbal platform paper, as a free-standing display poster board, or both. Authors of all accepted offers are required to produce a paper for publication in the Symposium proceedings. Registration concessions are available for authors.

All offers of papers or posters can only be made via the Symposium website at www.bcpc.org/seedtreatment. All offers must be submitted before Monday 29 September 2008 for consideration by the Programme Committee.

On the website, authors will be asked to complete an ‘Offer a Presentation form’ and must provide the proposed title and a brief synopsis (400 words maximum) of their presentation. Authors will also be asked to indicate which topic they are offering their presentation to.

All papers for publication within the proceedings are required to be in English and all scripts will be handled electronically.

THE EXHIBITION

An exhibition relevant to the Symposium will also be held. This will be located close to the conference hall and poster area and time will be built into the programme to allow delegates to visit the exhibition.

The exhibition will feature trade exhibits and demonstrations of new technologies and application techniques, as well as providing technical information on all aspects of seed treatment technology.

Organisations interested in exhibiting should contact Dr Colin Roscoe by email at: expro@bcpc.org

SYMPOSIUM TIMETABLE AND VENUE

The Symposium will commence mid-morning on Tuesday 24 February 2009 and will conclude mid-afternoon on Wednesday 25 February 2009.

The Symposium is to be held at the world famous Belfry business, golf and leisure hotel – home to the Ryder Cup. With 324 bedrooms, car parking for 1,000 cars, three full-sized golf courses and an extensive range of leisure facilities, the Belfry makes an ideal venue.

The Belfry is located in central England and is only 11 miles from the centre of Birmingham. It is easy to reach by road as the hotel lies just one mile from Junction 9 on the M42. Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International railway stations are nearby. If travelling by air, Birmingham International airport is six miles away.
